Can anyone help me respond to a right-wing idiot?
Wichita Eagle has a thing called the Opinion Line. People can call in and state an opinion without identifying themselves. Today one reads: "Democrats are courting values voters? Would that be liars under oath, sexual abusers of interns and fathers of illegitimate babies? Those sound like Demo values to me."

A similar post appeared recently. I'd like to be able to respond, but with a letter (which would need to be signed). I'd make a point of identifying myself (unlike the cowards who post such shit), and point out instances where the very things they're calling "demo values" are in fact more honored by repugnicans.

I might end up not writing the letter (I will have chance to cool down first!) but I'd like someone to send me in the direction of the post recently identifying republican pecadilloes. Anybody got a link to something like that?

(Surprisingly, even though we're in red-Kansas, more and more letters and opinion calls have a left-leaning tone. Maybe even here we're making progress!)

1. Two potential tacks
One is to point out the Right Wings Clinton Obsession - that usually doesn't go over well. 5 and a half years out of office and they are still obsessed with him.

The other is to point out the deaths caused by Bush and company and ask if those are reflective of Conservatoid values (which they are, but they probably don't want to admit that).

2. Fodder to get started...
http://www.dkosopedia.com/wiki/Moral_Values

Ronald Reagan First president to be divorced (from a woman who had been married two or three times before him none of which seems to bother the religious right).

Strom Thurmond, Republican Senator from South Carolina and racist, impregnated a 15-year old African American maid.

Joe Scarborough, former Republican Congressman from Pensacola, Florida, currently a conservative talk show host. Resigned his congressional seat abruptly to spend more time with his family, amidst allegations of an affair. His intern, Lori Klausutis, was soon after found dead in his office. The medical examiner, who had his license revoked in Missouri for falsifying information in an autopsy report, and suspended in Florida for six years, ruled the case an accident, after giving conflicting information about her injuries. He said he lied about them because "The last thing we wanted was 40 questions about a head injury."

Rush Limbaugh, triple-divorcee<9>, 30-pill a day drug addict.

Henry Hyde, Republican Congressman from Illinois, Judge who oversaw Clinton's impeachment proceedings, prominent opponent of reproductive rights, who had an extramarital affair with a woman who was married and had three children, during the course of which she and her husband were divorced.

Newt Gingrich, Republican from Georgia, married three times. Gingrich campaign worker Anne Manning admitted that she gave Newt oral sex while he was still married to his first wife. Informed one wife he was filing for divorce while she was in the hospital recovering from cancer treatments.

and so forth...

12. I assume so but...
There was such a blackout on the issue that we'll never know what really happened.

I mean, seriously, compare the Gary Condit episode to this and you have to recognize that the media are only lapdogs for the elite...anything newsworthy that gets through is only there to set the boundaires for debate.

Here is a pretty good story on the incident. I can't find much more because of the blackout. If anyone else has anything worthwhile to ad I'd love to read it.

4. The democrats
already have the liberal liars and adulterers, now they are looking to get votes from people who pick and choose in the bible the passages which justify their hate and ignore the ones which are inconvenient. Yeah, democrats are courting citizens who would use the constitution as a bludgeon against citizens they hate, you know those citizens democrats want to vote for them, conservatives.

Here's a few coals you can chuck in your oven:

7. Sam Wall (LOL)

Okay this isn't funny but the original poster might find it handy - I have seen jaws drop when I tell people about this

Susan Smith the "a black guy car jacked me and drown my kids" lady from So.Carolina

Well turns out....

She was spared the death penalty in a decision by her South Carolina jury, after her stepfather, prominent Union County Republican Party and Christian Coalition leader Beverly Russell, testified that he had sexually molested her when she was a teenager (until the intervention of the local Department of Social Services), and . Russell was never charged with a crime, despite the fact that he was accused in court of, and did not deny, the molestation and incestous sexual abuse of his teenaged stepdaughter. <2>

5. Well, if it was me
I'd comment on the hatefulness of the anonymous RW comments. Then I'd comment on how Democrats work hard for the lowest paid worker in America and Republicans work hard for the biggest businesses in America and with just a little respect and compromise we can actually come up with win win solutions for our very real problems. However, if the RW would prefer to stick only to hate speech instead of solutions then I guess the Democrats will have to figure out a way to get the job done alone.

10. Former congressman Randy "Duke" Cunningham
You know, the convict.

Or soon-to-be ex-congressman Bob Ney, who will likewise be heading to a jail cell soon enough.

Or soon-to-be ex-congressman Tom DeLay, who will soon be a guest of the Graybar Hotel in Texas.

As for fathers of illegitimate babies, I thought the Republicans had that market locked up with Henry Hyde and Strom Thurmond.

And the list goes on and on.

Unsolicited advice: Don't bother responding to anonymous shit-spewers who don't have the courage to attach their names to their uninformed opinions.

11. Don't forget Duke Cunningham, Ralph Reed and Abramoff
The guy who had a bribe menu printed up, the holy roller who was using gambling money to defeat a gambling-related bill, and a conservative, observant Jew who is doing 10 years for his dishonesty and greed. Or Tom Delay, who made it a rule that no one could lobby Congress without donating to various Republican funds, several of which enriched his wife and daughter.

Then we can get into sexual peccadillos. Robert Livingston, who was supposed to succeed Newtie, but resigned instead because there was proof of his S&M activities with DC prostitutes.

Or more generally, cutting college loans, school lunches for poor kids, education funding, and other societal benefits to pay for tax cuts for the rich. It goes on and on.

13. Perhaps a compare & contrast editorial might work. Don't just go defensive
go offensive as well. Just a thought but how about it you take what info others have posted here, add to that what the Republicans have been doing to harm America over the last 6+ years... contrast that to what the Dems have been trying to accomplish to help and call attention to the tactics of the Republican party that holds the majority and has for many years.

Just an aside... you mentioned you're in "red-Kansas", I don't know if you saw it or not but there was an interesting thread on DU, stemming from a Raw Story article, about how Republicans are changing parties in Kansas a lot lately: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=132&topic_id=2715346 If you hadn't seen it I thought it may give you a little bit of hope for Kansas. :)

16. Okay, throw out the OP's references to Ollie North and Strom Thurmond
and you're left with the erroneous "sexual abuser of an intern" ... it wasn't sex abuse ...

Hmm, maybe the OP was being sarcastic ... since they wouldn't name names during the "congressional page sex scandal" of the early 90s ... or Tailhook ...
