Anybody watching the House? I can't believe me eyes.
Georgia Republicans are standing up in opposition to renewing the voting rights act. I knew they were against it behind the scenes but geez I never thought they would take it to the floor.

1. What are they angry about?
Specifically, I mean.

Surely Georgia Republicans, who have benefited greatly from Diebold, aren't upset about touch-screen voting.

14. Like the Dixie Chick, I'm ashamed of being from there...
Originally from Georgia, there are a lot of Repug crazies and apparently some Demo-crazies as well. To add insult to injury, a friend of mine, so-called progressive, called my former congresswoman, Cynthia McKinney, a "coo-coo" as well. Must be something in the water. Still you couldn't pay me a trillion dollars to move back to that place...well, unless it's in the most progressive immediate surrounding areas like Decatur, N. Highlands or Druid Hills. Other than that...well...you get the picture.

See the GA forum for more info on past meetups. I'm going to organize an Athens DU meetup for late summer of early fall. (Can't conflict with UGA football games. I'll have to check the home game schedule.) We usually have a good crowd. Check out the GA forum if you haven't already.

12. Here is an article from Raw Story
http://www.rawstory.com/news/2006/Republicans_break_deal_with_Democrats_0713.html

Bowing to the demands of rank-and-file Republicans, House leaders granted consideration Wednesday to a bevy of amendments to the Voting Rights Act — including a measure to eliminate mandates for multilingual ballots — drawing the ire of Democrats who claim the move violates a bipartisan agreement over reauthorizing the landmark 1965 law.

On an 8-3 party-line vote, the House Rules Committee agreed to allow debate on four amendments when the VRA renewal reaches the House floor, expected to occur today.

....

Both of the remaining amendments, sponsored by Georgia GOP Reps. Charlie Norwood and Lynn Westmoreland, target the VRA’s Section 5, which mandates that states with a documented history of discrimination must “pre-clear” any changes to their electoral practices with the Justice Department.

The amendments would, respectively, reconfigure the formula used to apply that section of the law — which the Georgia lawmakers have argued is outdated and unfairly targets states including their own — and establish an expedited procedure for qualified jurisdictions to “bail out” from the law’s requirements.

I'm from Georgia. We used to have elected officials like Govs. Jimmy Carter & Roy Barnes and Senators Samm Nunn, Wyche Fowler and Max Cleland (all white male Democrats).

Now we have mostly black or female Democratic elected officials with a few true blue male Democrats who have remained with the party.

If it were not for Diebold in 2002 and the traiterous party switchers in the state assembly, we wouldn't be in this bad spot today. :grr:

We had Gov. Herman Talmadge too. He was a larger than life character. Only in Georgia!

Former Gov. Ernest Vandiver took us throught rhe civil rights era and the desegregation if UGA without bringing in troops or any bloodshed.

I moved here during the D-Gov. Joe Frank Harris era and then voted for D-Gov. Zig Zag Zell Miller twice and Roy Barnes Twice but got R-Gov. Sonny Perdue the last go around. :puke:

I really dislike Sonny. I've met him twice. He is the governor for rich, greedy, white , male bigots

Yes, I miss the days of Ben Jones, Max Cleland, Jimmy Carter, Joe Frank Harris, Sam Nunn...these were the true Democratic stalwarts who joined with progressives to ensure the rights of all. They are indeed a dying breed.

...I long for the day when Ben Jones gets his due revenge against Newt Gingrich, but I think I'll die before justice is ever served.
