Cedar Rapids Newspaper Drops Ann Coulter's Column

By Sarah Weber

Published: July 12, 2006 5:05 PM ET

NEW YORK Ann Coulter is no stranger to controversy, but her latest adventures have several newspapers questioning whether carrying her syndicated column is worth the trouble. The Shreveport (La.) Times is currently leaving the decision of whether or not to keep Coulter up to its readers. But the first newspaper to officially drop Coulter’s column since the latest uproar began seems to be The Gazette of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, where she had appeared for about 14 months.

Opinion Page Editor Doug Neumann told E&P, “Our decision was made before the plagiarism allegations. It did come after the publication of book, but I would say it didn’t directly play any role on our decision.”

However, Neumann surmised that Coulter’s incendiary book may have played an “indirect” role in the final decision. “I think it was the book that began to unwind support among her readers,” Neumann explained.

“Liberals have never liked her, and we’ve always gotten complaints . But the complaints that mattered the most were from the conservative readers,” who felt that their views were being misrepresented.

Hell even conservatives are turning against her

1. The Gazette used to be a good paper
20 years ago. Haven't read it much in the last decade or two, but glad to see the editorial board has some sense.

3. Good for them!
As a regular (and regularly disappointed) reader of the Shreveport Times, I daresay that paper will be keeping her if it lets it's readers decide. I hope they prove me wrong.

4. So the liberal complaints did not matter
Edited on Thu Jul-13-06 12:42 PM by BOSSHOG
however, ann represents conservative views perfectly. The "conservative" complainers were just pissed that their cold evil cruel hate filled hearts were exposed. Their hearts will remain the source of pain whether that paper runs ann or not. She is a spokesperson for the political party they support. Too bad facists can't have it three ways.

So, they don't care about their progressive readers?

9. Agreed
It's a sad commentary for the newspaper to use. They should just be interested in what their readers have to say without category, but they did drop her column and maybe that's the start of the snowball rolling downhill.

7. They dropped the 5'9" Sack of Snot's turds of idiocy from the
Tucson, Arizona daily POS rag. . .the Arizona Daily Star, amid the same complaints, which I believed was funnier than all hell because she is the personification of the logical conclusion of this neo-conservative movement.
