On that topic, Bush offered his first public reaction to Russian President Vladimir Putin's response to a strongly worded speech that Vice President Dick Cheney had made about Russia's flagging commitment to democracy in May.

"I think your vice president's expression there is like his bad shot on his hunting trip,'' Putin said during an interview on NBC's Today Show this week, making an allusion to Cheney's accidental wounding of a hunting companion.

"Did I think it was a clever response?" Bush said of Putin's remark. "It was pretty clever actually, quite humorous – not to dis my friend, the vice president."
