Joe Lieberman is in the Senate largely because of the patronage of one man: Paleoconservative icon William F. Buckley. Mr. Buckley, a Connecticut resident, was so disenchanted by Lowell Wiecker's Rockerfeller Republicanism that he active recruited Mr. Lieberman to run against him. Buckley was the brains behind Lieberman's campaign because even though it meant losing an "R" seat and making it a "D" seat, it would have two sanguine effects: cleansing the CT GOP of its liberal face and putting a moderate face on the CT Democratic party, compared to the rest of New England.
