6. This is the sort of moment, the sort of build-up of many moments,
when the entire world would be in far better straits if Al Gore or John Kerry were in the White House instead of the man who cheated both of them for the job.

18. Yes....and it's the moment when the Republican Party really needs
to get a major conflict going in advance of the November elections. North Korea's saber rattling got them off script with marketing the Iranian War direct....so time to implement Plan B. We'll be having our wars every 2 years from here on out...can't be changing horses in the middle of conflicts.

No real incentive for George to want to avoid this, is there?

21. I hear you. That's a hard-boiled & right-on analysis.
Dubya is not an affirming personality. I expect our allies who don't fear him outright think he's a little fool.

I wish little fools weren't capable of huge mistakes. The news from the Middle East has not been very uplifting this week.

20. maybe they live there?
i used to know some syrian-lebanese families who lived in the new orleans area in the 70s, couldn't blame em for getting the heck out of here if they had other options -- many of them were actually born in either usa or central america, not in the middle east

i got the impression that there are good numbers of syrian-lebanese immigrants in the americas who still had family ties and the right to go back home if they wished?

15. News report from Beirut, Lebanon:
Raids destroy 18 bridges, target key highways

By Nada Bakri
Daily Star staff
Friday, July 14, 2006

BEIRUT: Israeli warplanes destroyed 18 bridges and targeted several highways across the country on Thursday in a punishing series of strikes that left cities and citizens isolated. The overall financial damage to the bridges was estimated at $25 million, Public Works and Transportation Minister Mohammad Safadi said.

Israeli forces said they also plan to strike the key highway linking Beirut to Damascus as part of an assault aimed at retrieving the two soldiers seized by Hizbullah on Wednesday, according to a Defense Ministry briefing on Thursday.

"One of the targets for attack is the Beirut-Damascus road," said a parliamentary spokesman, summarizing a briefing given by officials to select lawmakers.

Israel's chief of staff, Dan Haltuz, also declared that no targets in Lebanon were immune from attack and that the military was prepared to continue its offensive indefinitely.

Israeli warplanes targeted the Litani River Bridge which links the province of Tyre, Zahrani and regional governorate offices in Sidon, 40 kilometers south of Beirut. ...

and when it came to that? (Due to the bombing closure of the airport) I heard earlier - Jamie McIntyre - that there are no Navy ships in the Eastern Mediterranean. Who knows? I expect there are lots of rumors flying since things are changing so rapidly.
