"I thought you were going to ask about the pig."
That was Bush's response to the following very serious questions about the Middle East today asked by a reporter at his press conference with Chancellor Merkel:

"There's a concern that the Beruit airport has been bombed, and do you see a risk of triggering a wider war, and on Iran, they have so far refused to respond. Is it too far past a deadline or do they still have time to respond."

And I am on PSTime.

What was the context?
What pig?

My head is swimming...

6. The context is a joint press conference (Bush is in Germany)
At the beginning he mentioned they talked about "a lot of things" and that there will be a feast later and he hears "he's gonna get to cut the pig"

The guy has no business being president.

11. "gonna get to cut the pig"
Well, now, THAT oughta play well in the Middle East.

I just saw a post saying it was on Daily Show.

I'll just wait a couple of hours.

Thanks for getting back to me, I was going somewhat vertiginous.

10. They were having a pig roast in blivet"s** honor tonight in Germany
and he couldn't keep from talking about the damn pig dinner.

They just showed the clip on The Daily Show. I was out most of the day too, so I missed it live too.

I am so ashamed that he is referred to as "Mr. President" anywhere in the world.

13. Well, now, Ms Sydnie...
That pig dinner ought to play real good on Al-Jazeera. How could they be so stupid/malicious?

I wonder - does a "pig dinner" mean that pigs are eating or being eaten?
I'm saying both.

and his glee about eating it, when the rest of the world was wondering if we would wake up tomorrow was just the icing on the cake.

"Let them eat pig ..."

16. yes, he thinks everything is a big party in his honor ...
... and that everyone is expecting him to blurt out idiotic things. He appears to have conflated the "court jester" and "President" jobs.

15. Another 'My Pet Goat' moment
We're on the brink of all out war and Bush is fixated with something beyond banal.

The fact that he mentioned the pig at all is hard to believe. But that he mentioned it in response to such a serious question is very worrisome. This man is not well.

17. if anything, this is even worse than the time he fixated on those Bibles
Back when that US aircrew was captured by China, people were amazed that the only thing Bush could come up with was whether the prisoners had access to Bibles! At the time, commentators wondered if it was just because he was so new to the job, or whether he really was incompetent.

Now we know.

21. What must the Germans think?
When he visited Germany a few months ago, he was asked about his best moment in office. He replied by describing the time he caught a fish on his ranch.

Now he's asked about his thoughts on the possible outbreak of all-out war. He talks about a pig.

This is worse than Chauncey Gardner. Bush doesn't even make a believable puppet for the PNAC, but no one seems to care.

22. Just wrong on so many levels
Now, I happen to like pork and if someone invited me to a special wild boar roast in my honor I'd certainly be looking forward to it. BUT: if I'm working and someone asks me a very serious question about my business, one that had bearings on my future success, I'd answer the question seriously and not imply that my own desire to eat barbecue was more important than, for example, preventing WWIII. But that's just me, and I haven't had the advantages of an Andover/Yale/Harvard edumacation.

And I certainly hope I have the cultural sensitivity not to bring up pigs when asked about a longstanding conflict between people of two religions which both arbor swine. But then my grandfather wasn't a senator, and my father wasn't president, so maybe there's some subtlety I'm missing here.

As an earlier poster said, "Let them eat pig" should be the motto of this administration.

27. Also, he took the baton from the conductor of the music being
played, and wanted Condeleeza to play the organ. He twice talked about the pig when asked questiosn. I have been trying to find a link to the story Randi said she got from AP but so far no luck.

But, golly shit! Is this humiliation for us ever going to end?

28. He is totally unfit for the office he holds.
It's mind boggling how severely lacking the man is. It's becoming an every day thing for him to make an ass out of himself on a national or international stage. It's like watching American Idol when there's a laughable contestant doing his thing. It makes you squirm in your seat and clutch at the arms on your chair. You want it to be over but no one is stopping him. He keeps moving on to the next round day after day.
