Where is Peter Arnett?
Peter Arnett was fired by CNN in 2003 after he made some remarks that were deemed to be unsympathetic to the war effort. He was immediately hired by the Daily Mirror of London. And has apparently fallen off the face of the earth. I can find no mention of him anywhere after April 2003. Go ahead, you try. He seems to have vanished. How wierd is that? Hubby brought this to my attention the other day and I was intrigued enough to search on the web. I find it disturbing that someone that famous can disappear without a trace.

1. I thought about this, too. I was watching some movie
about CNN in the early days. I tried to google, but found virtually nothing.

5. some quotes from Peter :
I am still in shock and awe at being fired.
Peter Arnett

I'd like to say from the beginning that the 12 years I've been coming here, I've met unfailing courtesy and cooperation, courtesy from your people and cooperation from the Ministry of Information.
Peter Arnett

Our reports about civilian casualties here, about the resistance of the Iraqi forces, are going back to the United States. It helps those who oppose the war when you challenge the policy to develop their arguments.
Peter Arnett

President Bush says he is concerned about the Iraqi people, but if Iraqi people are dying in numbers, then American policy will be challenged very strongly.
Peter Arnett

Right-wing media and politicians are looking for any opportunity to be critical of the reporters who are here. Some reporters make judgments, but that is not my style. I present both sides and report what I see with my own eyes.
Peter Arnett

The first war plan has failed because of Iraqi resistance. Now they are trying to write another war plan. Clearly, the American war planners misjudged the determination of the Iraqi forces.

8. Yeah, but is he now sleeping with the fishes? Witness protection?
Not a peep in 3 years? If he is working for the Daily Mirror I would think there would be articles referenced online.

John Yoo! Yes "the child testicle crusher" Yoo! I about fell off of my chair when I read that the other day.

<snip>

Yoo is the son-in-law of television reporter Peter Arnett.

10. think we found him
Later that day, Arnett was hired by the British tabloid newspaper the Daily Mirror, which opposed the war. A couple of days later he was also assigned to Greek television channel NET television, and Belgian VTM.

11. Oblermann transcript from March 4, 2005
And as background to that mess, a new take on the final days of previous Iraqi government. A report that as the U.S. attacked two years ago, Saddam Hussein was on the verge of being overthrown by his own son. So writes Peter Arnett in the new issue of "Playboy" magazine that Uday Hussein had been plotting to usurp his father.

An 18-month investigation by Arnett revealing that Uday had the support of Saddam`s Fedayeen militia and that Saddam himself tried to have his son killed. Arnett, also presenting more color about what we already knew, that Uday Hussein jailed television anchors with whom he disagreed and beat Iraqi soccer players who did not win for him.

At the time of the reported attempted overthrow, Arnett was working for "National Geographic Explorer" and MSNBC. He says his research did not begin until the final week of his employment here.

23. Have you read his memoir 'Live From the Battlefield'?
It was written after the first Gulf War. It covers his entire life and career, including the Vietnam years, up to the time after the first Gulf War.

17. Odd you bring up Arnett
Last month, I started to think about and how the entire media realm owes him an apology. He's got a school of Journalism named after him in his native country, New Zealand:

http://www.sit.ac.nz/school-journalism.htm

I checked out the site mentioned on the page above (www.foreignTV.com). There were no articles or video clips/feeds. I haven't seen a story authored by Mr. Arnett since he was so wrongly railroaded out of the MSM.

aka "The Scud Stud" from the first Gulf War who sued NBC for breach of contract (they butchered his stories for Dateline), and later went on to publicly denounce the Bush* Administration in the runup to Gulf War 2.0.

Today, Arnett spends most of his time living in Baghdad, writing for magazines and taking time to write a book about the fall of the Baath regime.

24. Did you know that Mona Charen said Arnett lied about a Vietnam war quote?
Edited on Tue Jan-17-06 11:49 AM by CottonBear
She is a truly awful individual. How would she fucking know what the officer said since she wasn't there? It must be a true quote if scum like Charen went out of theri way to personally smear Arnett.

...snip...

Arnett quoting a U.S. army officer in Vietnam, when asked about the background for the use of much heavy artillery against a small village.
"We had to destroy the village in order to save it."
(Mona Charen claims this quote is a fabrication of Arnett's, and that the village in question was destroyed by hostile Vietnamese forces rather than the United States.)
