WOW!!! My grandmama really took a leap today and I found it hard |
|
to argue with her...not that I really wanted to but get what she said:
Grandmama: The ME is aflame and the world is bordering on total destruction because of gays and the gay marriage issue.
Me: What?!! You have got to be kidding me. You have two grandsons who are gay and you love them dearly.
Grandmama: I know, I know. But if it had not been for the gay marriage issue the bastards in charge now would not have been able to get the votes they needed to remain in office and this neocon cabal would not be running things now. We would be out of Iraq and Israel would not be so cock-sure of themselves that they will continue getting aid and weapons from the US. It'all because of the gay marriage amendment that those Christian nuts came out and voted for these bastards and now they will throwing their children in the flames. Damn it, I want my grandsons to move to Canada.
Me: What can I say?
God, that was a leap but I was totally stunned by her thinking.

2. Not really. The election was stolen. If it hadn't been gay marriage, |
|
it would've been some other made up non-issue that most people don't give a shit about, and the corporate media would've crowed about it for weeks until it became accepted fact.

4. But the gay marriage issue isn't the fault of the gays |
|
It's the Republicans who politicized it for votes who are to blame.

19. She wasn't blaming the gays. I guess in her use of the language |
|
it could be construed that way but she was solidly blaming the idiots who vote for those silly wedge issues that end up costing them in big ways.

5. It wasn't the gays and the gay marriage issue that got Bush the votes |
|
he needed to win. It was the electronic voting machine counting software. Without that and the various methods of suppressing likely Kerry voters that gave Bush the election.

8. Yep. for the last three elections the Repub 'victory' has been |
|
dependent upon a "surprise" issue or demographic -- the 'evangelical vote', the 'conservative hispanic vote', the 'pro-marriage vote'. Each time, a new group or issue to explain an unexpected, poll-contrary surge in votes for the repubs.
They've already set the stage for this year, with the 'secure borders voters'. Whether they exist or not, that will be the claim.
But it's Diebold, every time.

6. Tell your Grandma to pick up the phone and call everyone she knows. |
|
Tell her to tell them all that they must vote to get the Republican control in Congress removed. Even if it means voting for Dems they don't like, they must do it to restore the balance we're missing.
Things won't be perfect, but it will prevent more damage from being done, and we can start the repair process.
Use this frustration and anger to do something positive!

As a gay man and budding political scientist, I have to say that I truly believe she is absolutely correct in her summation of the problem. The "gay issue," however, may serve as a catalyst for people truly understanding the lengths to which the Christian right will go - and has painted a fairly gross picture of them.
No fears though, unless Bush happens to be a reconstructionist president (which I don't think he is - I think he's a pre-emptive one myself) a Democrat will be elected in 2008 and a democratic congress will be elected in 2006
That's not just hopeful thinking. My source is Dr. Carey Covington of the University of Iowa. (He specializes in American Executive Politics)

17. The Massachusetts Gay Marriage Stance in May, 2004 was CLEARLY |

a republican plot to get the issue on camera..on the nightly news..to show gays and lesbians getting married. It was meant to divide and conquer and it worked like a charm....

18. If it had not been for the idiots who are afraid of gays |
|
It's not the issue, it's the people who fear it that are the problem. It's the eploitation of the issue (and the exploitation of the people who fear it and the exploitation of people who are fighting for their rights) by the "bastards in charge", not the issue itself.
I understand and appreciate what she thinks she's saying but I believe we have to stand up for everyone's rights. I don't believe we should only stand up for them when it's politically convenient for us to do so. You know, once upon a time someone said the same thing about blacks and women. In fact, I KNOW that's what some people said after 9/11...
What she should have said (and perhaps what she really meant) is: "But if it had not been for the exploitation of the gay marriage issue by the bastards in charge..." Perhaps that is too nuanced, too subtle a difference to be easily understood but one blames the gays (who cares about their rights, we have an election to win and we'll get to them later...) and the other places the blame squarely where it belongs - on the "bastards in charge".

It's funny though how some will say that and mean what she meant and some will say the exact same thing (the "because of gays and the gay marriage issue" part) and mean something completely different. Language fascinates me, especially the written word, because we can not easily comprehend the context or the intent of the speaker.
:hug:s to your grandmother.
