US may have kidnapped families of Iraqi detainees
http://www.rawstory.com/news/2006/US_may_have_kidnapped_families_of_0714.html

American forces in Iraq have been accused of kidnapping the families of detainees as an interrogation tactic, RAW STORY has learned. snip

Salon added that Members of Congress including Rep. Christopher Shays, a Republican of Connecticut, have issued a subpoena to Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld to hand over documents on the matter. They are due at 5 PM today.

An excerpt from the subscribers-only article is included below.

#
Congress has demanded that Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld hand over a raft of documents to Congress that could substantiate allegations that U.S. forces have tried to break terror suspects by kidnapping and mistreating their family members. Rumsfeld has until 5 p.m. Friday to comply.

It now appears that kidnapping, scarcely covered by the media, and absent in the major military investigations of detainee abuse, may have been systematically employed by U.S. troops. Salon has obtained Army documents that show several cases where U.S. forces abducted terror suspects’ families. After he was thrown in prison, Cpl. Charles Graner, the alleged ringleader at Abu Ghraib, told investigators the military routinely kidnapped family members to force suspects to turn themselves in.

1. The US is the Occupying Power in Iraq
It is a form of terrorism to kidnap people families.

This is what Bush calls bringing democracy to the Middle East?

2. It's copying the Arab states of the region.
A few years ago I made some cynical comments about if they were gonna do this because it was basically the only way the Jordanians etc. have controlled terror: putting pressure on families. ...So the US has been doing that, and it still can't get control of this thing. That's impressive. That's just fighting too much depth of resentment and anger that you can't find it all and stamp it out.

3. I read this or a similar report just about the time Abu Graib broke.
IIRC, we've been taking hostages since Day 1.

Maybe it was at Amnesty International or the Red Cross? I'm sorry, I just don't remember. It could have been at the late beloved warblogging.com

Timely. Because it shows what can only be called radical inconsistency between taking hostages in Iraq and supporting Israel this week.

These are some majorly f*cked up times we're living in.

5. You're absolutely right
One example that comes to mind was the case of the U.S. holding the CHILDREN of one of the Iraqi generals in an attempt to get him to talk.

7. You are completely correct...
On my site DoYouKnow.org I had reports of the US kidnapping family members of those wanted and destroying their homes. I was livid about it at the time and felt so ashamed to be an American.

Not much has changed....
