Eisenhower's farewell speech to be broadcast shortly |
|
live stream online at www.wpvm.org
Today (Jan. 17) is the 45th anniversary of President Dwight D. Eisenhower's farewell speech to the nation, in which he warned about the growing threat to our civil liberties by what he called the "military-industrial complex."
Each year, MAIN & WPVM commemorate this speech -- one of the most important in our nation's history -- by broadcasting it on Jan. 17. You can hear the entire 16-minute speech at 1 and 9 p.m. today on WPVM, 103.5 FM, Asheville following our broadcast of "Democracy Now!"
You can also get a live stream online at wpvm.org. Please spread the word!

1. It gives me chills when I think of it...how prophetic. I suppose Ike |
|
would be considered a knee-jerk liberal by today's standards.

2. Thanks for the link! How ironic that today is the 45th anniversary. |
|
Finally, 45 years later the "military-industrial complex" has taken over our government. :(

3. Eisenhower: Flaming Liberal by Today's Standards |
|
I recently wrote an essay on how Eisenhower was a flaming Liberal by today's standards. For example, he fought to keep the top tax rate at 91% - and capital gains were taxed at the same rate as was earned income. See http://blueworksbetter.com/EisenhowerFlamingLiberal for details.

4. What is extremely ironic about this speech |
|
Is that it what Eisenhower who laid down much of the foundation for our modern military-industrial complex. His pumping of the Cold War, his patronization of the CIA's many, many Black Ops, his nurturing of many modern day weapons systems all laid the groundwork for the military industrial take over of our government.
I view this speech really as Eisenhower's apology for letting this geni out of the bottle, and a warning of things to come if we couldn't put it back. That bottle remains uncorked to this day.
