Anyone notice that the show '24' is pushing FoxNews?
On last night's show, whenever they showed news clips (ie President Logan's summit, Russian treaty signing, etc), they always used FoxNews. Overall, I find the show pretty enjoyable, but I did find that just a bit annoying. I don't really expect them to promote their rival, but still it seemed a bit over the top.

1. So you think a show created by Fox should feature NBC as a newsource

2. It's a FOX show.
They've always done that, every season. I'm a big 24 fan, so I've learned to just ignore it.

6. Me too.
LOVE the show, so I overlook the embedded Fox News ads.

3. The creator of that show is an admitted wingnut...
In fact in an interview he referred to himself as a "self proclaimed right-wing nut". So it really shouldn't surprise anyone. That doesn't make it a bad show, but it does mean that I'm sure certain aspects of an agenda will show through.

11. show's creators have never donated a dime to political candidates
Both Robert Cochran and Joel Surnow can't be too radical if they've never even made a donation over the past 30 years (source: newsmeat.com).

Of course, neither have Bruce Willis nor Mel Gibson.

22. Hey, whatever...
I'm not inferring that they may or may not be based on my own perceptions. I've only seen one or two episodes of 24 so I'm not an expert on the content. I'm saying in an interview (I think in Entertainment Weekly) the one creator/writer said, in exact words "I'm a self professed right wing nut".

25. I don't doubt you...
...but I'm thinking he may just be yet another opportunist trying to build an audience of loyal-to-the-death mouth breathers, since it's unlikely many liberals are going to enjoy a show of this ilk.

Both creators must be rolling in it, yet they can't put $1 where the mouthes are? Hell, even liberal D-level Hollywood celebs donate quite a bit of change to their candidates.

Is now the show's executive producer, he is definitely NOT a wingnut.

21. I know he's not...
I didn't say the producers. I'm saying the guy who created and writes the show. Like I said, it doesn't make it a bad show. But just as writer/creators on liberal shows slip in their preferences to plot lines and pieces, so likely does this guy.

9. Yes it is (Spoilers)
24 is a very popular show, and a very enjoyable one. But it is pushing an extremist right wing agenda.

Beyond the pushing of Fox News, there's the scene where Jack Bauer, the hero of the show, summarily executes a person who assassinated the Former President. This is a right wing fantasy where criminals are killed without the need for trials or courtrooms or "activiist judges."

5. they've always done that
It's all the same family. So whenever they need TV news, they use Fox News. 24 has tons of product placements in the show (Cisco, Sprint, Dell), they may very well be compensated. I don't think there's any sinister plot here, annoying as it is.

Don't remember the acronym, but I have noticed it.

I don't watch much of "The West Wing", but do they use MSNBC a lot?

8. That's common
It's a Fox show.

The West Wing (NBC) always shows MSNBC in the background. Sometimes you see CNN, given that TimeWarner produces West Wing, but not often.

10. Do you think it's Ok for jack to torture?
Just wondering.

I found that in the context of the show it didn't bother me, because we all knew the guy was behind 'the plot'.

18. I don't agree with the torture (spoiler)
For the simple reason you don't know if you're getting reliable info or not. Even without considering the moral implications, it's just not tactically sound.

Perfect example - when the terrorist has a gun to the kid's head and threatens to kill him if Jack doesn't order the assault team into a new position, Jack manages to use the duress code to thwart the terrorists.

13. They've done that for years
It is a FOX show, after all.

However, they did show another "network" the other night. It looked like the letters were "CNB" but they used the CNN font (or something very similar).

15. LOL! The show is merely a psyops campaign that earns money
Edited on Tue Jan-17-06 12:46 PM by Vinnie From Indy
for FOX. The show's whole premise is to "normalize" the view that the rule of law and the Constitution must be ignored in order to keep Americans safe. It is the same FEAR message that is spoken bluntly by Bush and Cheney but in this case it is wrapped up in a nice bit of theater. Subverting democracy and making a buck at the same time must be a wet dream for FOX and BushCo.

17. Has been doing this from day 1. Understandably, unfortunately
Last night, though (or was it Sunday?) at one point the breaking news were on "CNB"

23. Whenever I see other shows
in the past I usually see no network named or something local. When I was watching "West Wing" they usually have it on CSPAN or they'd have a layout similar to CNN but no name.

24. I've seen CNN on a few fictional shows
I think on some of the original "disaster" programming that I've seen on Discovery and Sci-Fi, they've used CNN. I don't know if that was to lend realism, or if those channels are owned by the same parent group (come to think of it, that's more likely).

30. I think there's also a fictional network that pops up from time to time
I think it's named "CNB" and its logo kinda looks like the old yellow CNN logo.

But of course they're going to show Fox News to pimp themselves. I seem to recall that previous seasons also showed Fox News a little, but not to the extent we've seen in the first four hours of this season.
