10. It was sort of amazing. I was a little girl and my brother was a baby.
My uncles had already stopped going to the ballpark because they were too busy but ALL their wives kept going anyway.

My mom and my two aunts had the whole Giants outfield in the palm of their hands. lol

That was before there was a serious terrorist threat from the south and birthday cakes were waved through the barricades.

They were pretty amazing, those guys. Look at them, kids:

They didn't do it in 2004 although they lied about that.

Let's not let them do it, again.

15. My pleasure.
All we can do is be ourselves. The TexMex population here in Dallas is like any other. They go where their best interests are. We have to show to EVERYBODY (Mexican, black, white, whatever) that the dem viewpoint is much more adventageous than the rep one.

I have a good friend here in Dallas who was the first judge of Mexican decent to be on the bench in Dallas. He says that, "We Mexicans are taking over Texas one baby at a time."

And it's true. The popuolation here is exploding with first, second, and third generation Mexican groups assimilating even faster than the Irish, Germans, or Italians of the last century (19th not 20th).

It's kind of fun to watch as the sons and daughters of these emmigrants become civic leaders. The lawyers I work with. The business owners. My new neighbors. The city councilmen or county commissioners that are on the news.

The times, they are a changing. And I think it is for the good. The white-bread good old boy network is now suddenly challenged. Good!

It's really nice to not even have to notice that Joe or Manula is of Mexican descent. They are just part of the community. They are my bosses, freinds, neighbors, councilmen (persons...sorry) police, firefighters, etc.

They (?) you are just there. Interacting and I no more notice that they may have ancestory in Mexico than I do with my wife, who is from London and speaks with a funny accent. (Which I don't notice much anymore.)

What wonderful diversity all of the melting pot has brought to North America! I just love it.

(Jennifer ain't got nothin' on Ms. Tejada!)

Spring Storm

The sky has given over
its bitterness.
Out of the dark change
all day long
rain falls and falls
as if it would never end.
Still the snow keeps
its hold on the ground.
But water, water is seething
from a thousand runnels.
It collects swiftly,
dappled with black
cuts a way for itself
through green ice in the gutters.
Drop after drop it falls
from the withered grass stems
of the overhanging embankment.

Sane people will prevail. This country is so vast. Every pocket has its irritations.

My husband talks about all the Asian immigrants to San Francisco , "Don't EVER put down Asian people. They could all JUMP up and down at the SAME TIME and we'd FLY OFF the face of the Earth."

Every time I see that movie, I just adore him all the more. Being a New Mexican who grew up not far from Trucas where Milagro was filmed, I have to say that Rubén totally transformed himself into a Northern New Mexicano. I also loved him in the Two Jakes. He again shows that he isn't just a cutie pie, a fabulous singer, a righteous politico, & a lawyer, but an excellent actor as well.

76. Cool Thread
Here is a little known to fact to those who aren't familiar with Spanish/Latin American culture. This is a picture of probably the first Hispanic activist. He fought vigorously against indigenous slavery and their human rights.

Fray Bartolomé de las Casas.

80. Seventh grade? That is great!
I didn't hear about him until college and that was only because I was studying Spanish/LA Lit.

81. They didn't even mention Latin America when I was in Junior High
In the 70s-90s, Social Studies teachers in my district pushed for Latin American Geography/History to be covered in the seventh grade. Unfortunately the 2000s <or should I say the dark ages of W years> have not been kind to Social Studies in schools. First they are gutting the Social Studies programs, even to the point of eliminating them. Oh no, we don't want an understanding of other people, questioning our history, or using critical thinking skills. I'm one of the old guard who refuses to give in to the New World Order. I have always included Latin America in my own curriculum long before it went in and out of fashion. I teach Hispanic and Native American children. I would be remiss if I didn't include their history as well. In fact, when I first began teaching, thirty years ago, there was no such thing as Native American history in public schools. I starting including the History of New Mexican Native groups, and just the look on the faces of my Indian students was worth all the work.

I'm not even going to begin on how much my female students love Frida!

82. We used to study California History every year and it drove
my mom nuts. "Again?!"

I got in trouble for putting up a whipping post in my sugar cube mission model.

But later, I did get to take some classes in Native American Studies. That wasn't available until college though.

85. Jimmy Smits of NYPD Blue and L.A. Law fame...
... but his absolute best acting was in Mi Familia, or My Family as I see they are calling it on the Internet Movie Data Base link---->http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0113896/ If you click on Jimmy Smits in the Cast, you can see all that he has been in. Any NYPD Blue fan can tell you that Jimmy has one beautiful naked behind....whooppppssss....my dirty old ladiness is showing. ;-)

Another favorite movie of Jimmy's is a made for TV Movie called Cisco Kid. Another one of my favorites, Cheech Marín, is Pancho in this flick. Remember Cheech & Chong?

If you watch The West Wing, then Jimmy is the next Hispanic President of the U.S. They call him the first, but Martin Sheen played the prior president and he is a Mexicano from Ohio. His real name is Ramon Gerard Antonio Estevez. When he first started in Hollywood, a Ramon Estevez wasn't likely to get hired, but a Sheen could. It is good to see that his son Emilio Estevez used his own name, as does Matín's daughter and son, Ramon, also do. There is a thriving Mexican community in Ohio BTW.

88. Dave's Not Here!
There was, maybe even still is a Dave's Not Here Cafe in Santa Fe, NM. I loved going there because all the food was really natural and healthy. I don't go to SF much these days. All sorts of rico outsiders moved in and pushed out the Chicanos who couldn't afford the property taxes. It is even happening in the area I live it. My and just about every NM Hispanic's ancestors founded both Santa Fe and Alburquerque and we are getting pushed out. The Mexican-American War just keeps going on and on and on.
