Fundamentalist Iran
Edited on Sat Jul-15-06 12:28 PM by newyawker99
IMO, This is way more scary & dangerous than any Christian fundamentalist will ever be, but I haven't seen any discussions about this. Food for thought.

'Divine mission' driving Iran's new leader
By Anton La Guardia

(Filed: 14/01/2006)

As Iran rushes towards confrontation with the world over its nuclear programme, the question uppermost in the mind of western leaders is "What is moving its President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to such recklessness?"

Political analysts point to the fact that Iran feels strong because of high oil prices, while America has been weakened by the insurgency in Iraq.

President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad
But listen carefully to the utterances of Mr Ahmadinejad - recently described by President George W Bush as an "odd man" - and there is another dimension, a religious messianism that, some suspect, is giving the Iranian leader a dangerous sense of divine mission.

In November, the country was startled by a video showing Mr Ahmadinejad telling a cleric that he had felt the hand of God entrancing world leaders as he delivered a speech to the UN General Assembly last September.

When an aircraft crashed in Teheran last month, killing 108 people, Mr Ahmadinejad promised an investigation. But he also thanked the dead, saying: "What is important is that they have shown the way to martyrdom which we must follow."

The most remarkable aspect of Mr Ahmadinejad's piety is his devotion to the Hidden Imam, the Messiah-like figure of Shia Islam, and the president's belief that his government must prepare the country for his return.

2. This fellow has started persecuting Iranian Sufis
Sufism is the mystical sect of Islam, and is, by and large, progressive or even liberal in its outlook. The Iranian president recently had the house and teaching center of a Sufi teacher bulldozed and burnt. Sufis who had come to peacefully protest were arrested (between 1 and 2 thousand), some were tortured, and some have yet to be released. This particular Sufi Order was said to have ties to the West and thus were condemned (Sufism is made of many different Orders, most of which are international in scope), and the mureeds (students) were warned not to be practicing their faith, which is considered heretical. There is more on this at the Islam group.

4. "This is way more scary...
Edited on Sat Jul-15-06 11:50 AM by reichstag911
... & dangerous than any Christian fundamentalist will ever be...." Including that fundie in the White House? How many notches on GW's six-shooter, compared to Ahmadinejad? All fundies are delusional, especially when they claim, as GW has, that God speaks to 'em. That doesn't scare you? Look at the body count, not what they say, if you want to know who and what they are.

5. Great point!
"Look at the body count, not what they say, if you want to know who and what they are."

Or, as Jesus is reported to have said, "You will know them by their fruits."

6. not "more" scary....
Edited on Sat Jul-15-06 12:07 PM by annabanana
not even really "different" scary..

Same ol "My God is better than YOUR God scary" as since time began...

All streams of Islam believe in a divine saviour, known as the Mahdi, who will appear at the End of Days. A common rumour - denied by the government but widely believed - is that Mr Ahmadinejad and his cabinet have signed a "contract" pledging themselves to work for the return of the Mahdi and sent it to Jamkaran.

Different names, same shit.

7. If you think
that Ahmadinejad wouldn't love anything more than to rack up a massive western body count, you are very mistaken. He wants Americans dead, and he couldn't care less if we voted for Bush or Kerry.

8. I think the poster's point was that
Chimpy already HAS a massive body count. Isn't proven malice and insanity more scary than what some alleged nutjob "would love" to do?
