Israel is right on the brink from starting a war with syria(and then probably Iran) the Middle East situation is quickly boiling over into world war 3. We have our battle fatigued volunteer service in Iraq.

Once Israel strikes at Iran and Syria, there is absolutely no doubt that our forces in Iraq will be drawn into this, we're right smack dab in the middle.

I can easily see how the administration and media(ahem...fox and there henchmen) will hail this as a major crisis(complete with WW2 comparisons) where we have no other choice but to reinstate the draft.

The only ones I know about were the selective service boards set up what, in the late '70s?

They have terms of appointment; every 10 years or so they're restaffed. They've existed continuously since the SS registration was reinstated.

I strongly doubt that this particular conflict was the reason for anything in the '70s.
