First of all, in bankrupting the US, they are transferring US treasure into the pockets of the private military industrial complex aka Bush's base. There is unimaginable fortune to be made in both destroying, and then rebuilding, nations.

What's the worse thing that can happen to Bush, Cheney, and pals -- to be the subject of a harsh editorial? To lose an election?

No matter how this mess turns out, they've already achieved, and pocketed, what they wanted.

To address the "ignoring the middle east" part of your question: that was a Bush policy, announced in his first Cabinet meeting in 2001, that he was going to withdraw from the situation and allow Israel to prevail. Destabilization brings about military intervention, which enriches the corporations which profit from war. If they could arrange for Israeli regional dominance in a re-organized Middle East, then that was icing on the cake.
