Vatican condemns Israel for attacks on Lebanon

VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - The Vatican on Friday strongly deplored Israel's strikes on Lebanon, saying they were "an attack" on a sovereign and free nation.
Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Angelo Sodano said Pope Benedict and his aides were very worried that the developments in the Middle East risked degenerating into "a conflict with international repercussions."

"In particular, the Holy See deplores right now the attack on Lebanon, a free and sovereign nation, and assures its closeness to these people who already have suffered so much to defend their independence," he told Vatican Radio.

Israel struck Beirut airport again on Friday and bombed Lebanese roads, power supplies and communication networks in a widening campaign after Hizbollah guerrillas seized two Israeli soldiers and killed eight.

Sodano said the Vatican condemned both "terroristic attacks" and military reprisals.

Hizbollah, which wants to trade its captives for prisoners held in Israel, has showered rockets across the frontier in its fiercest bombardment since 1996 when Israel launched a 17-day blitz against southern Lebanon and Hizbollah.

But Sodano reserved his harshest words for Israel.

"The right of defence on the part of a state does not exempt it from its responsibility to respect international law, particularly regarding the safeguarding of civilian populations," he said.

1. What about God's law?
Well I STRONGLY DEPLORE THE STINKING VATICANS RESPONSE TO ISRAEL'S RESPONSE. Unbelievable, the nerve of these people...it's just disgusting...

And "respect international law"???? Are these people serious???? What about God's law? What about his promises to his chosen people? What about the right for a country to defend itself? After 6 years of being the world's doormat Israel has had enough and rightly so. I am absolutely ashamed of the Vatican's response and find it nearly as deplorable as the terrorist acts that started this whole thing--cause they should know better.

3. Israel is attacking a CHRISTIAN NATION!!!
You'd think the RW nuts would know that. But I guess they assume most people must be Muslims (really only some are) because they speak arabic in Lebanon.

The Christians are Maronites, and they are the only Eastern Orthodox observers to honor the Pope. Hence, the reason he is openly condemning Israel. This could be interesting. If Israel pisses off a billion or so Catholics, that would add to the billion Muslims they have already pissed off.

5. And This Surprises You Why?
Fundies of American made Protestant religions, who preach a pre-tribulation rapture of the church, aren't really fond of Catholics in my experience anyhow.

Living in Fundyland Arkansas, I can tell you that any alliance with Catholics over things like abortion, or gay marriage, has been strictly one of utilitarianism. In the minds of many fundies Catholics worship idols, the pope, and "dead people" (saints)

So, I'm not surprised that folks on "Rapture-Ready" are for the large part bashing the Vatican.
Some of them even believe that a Pope will be the antichrist

6. I have been told several times by fundies that Catholics are not
Christians.

I never got a straight answer on how they figure that.

7. Yes, It's Bigotry
that seems to be acceptable in the world of fundies

they say they worship the Pope, and the Virgin Mary, along with Christ.

It always kind of cracks me up to think that the bible as they know it was put together by the Roman Catholic Church early in church history.

Fundies are selectively literalists, and seem to have similar beliefs (although as far as I know Baptists don't believe in talking in tongues, and Pentecostals and others that speak in tongues don't think that Baptists or other religions that don't believe in speaking in tongues aren't following the bible.

I'm just a plan old liberal Christian who thinks fighting over beliefs is stooopid, and it is probably never really about the beliefs (except to the gullible) but about the politics and power involved.

10. Ditto that
The reasoning is that you have to accept Jesus's gift in order to be saved, i.e., a Christian. It takes your own initiative to ensure your salvation.
