5. That's why it was delayed
They're in a built-in hold now.

Here's the mission's website
http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/newhorizons/main/index.html

New Launch Time: 2:10 p.m. EST
Due to concerns over winds, the launch team is now targeting a liftoff at 2:10 p.m. EST. Hope remains that the winds will die down enough to allow a launch this afternoon. Weather is otherwise favorable.

The Atlas V launch vehicle and its Centaur upper stage are fully loaded with supercold propellants, and the countdown is proceeding smoothly. The launch vehicle and spacecraft are in good health and no technical issues are in work.

As the first spacecraft to visit Pluto and its moon Charon, New Horizons looks to unlock one of the solar system's last, great planetary secrets. After launch aboard an Atlas V, the New Horizons spacecraft will cross the entire span of the solar system and conduct flyby studies of Pluto and Charon in 2015. The seven science instruments on the piano-sized probe will shed light on the bodies' surface properties, geology, interior makeup and atmospheres.

11. I recall living in Ft. Lauderdale years ago
There was a night Shuttle launch on a really southern trajectory. We had a GREAT view of it, it was HUGE! I also got to be at the launch of STS26, the launch after Challenger. Talk about an emotional experience, 3.5 miles from the pad!!!

16. It is a great sight!
I was at the first launch of the Space Shuttle(STS-1)on 4/12/81 when I was 6. We lived in Kissimmee at the time and my parents brought us as close as we could get. There were thousands of cars parked everywhere and we had to stay overnight. I remember feeling the ground shaking under my feet during lift off. It was amazing! I have been hooked ever since.

I remember watching a night launch from West Palm about 5 years ago and I was able to follow the ship until it hit the horizon. It was picking up sunlight and started to shine. I was blown away!

Another great sight is watching the Space Station fly over while the Space Shuttle is chasing it. It looks like 2 stars in a race across the sky. Just amazing :)

Wind was the only thing that was iffy. The maximum wind speed was 33 knots, was that exceeded?

43. They'll try again tomorrow
NASA will try again on Wednesday, Jan. 18 to launch an Atlas V rocket carrying the New Horizons spacecraft. The launch window extends from 1:16 p.m. - 3:15 p.m. EST. The Atlas V is poised for liftoff from Launch Pad 41 at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida.

During the first launch attempt on Jan. 17, the countdown was extended several times in hopes that excessive upper level and ground winds would die down. But ultimately, the winds surpassed limits during the final minutes, preventing a liftoff. The spacecraft and launch vehicle remained healthy throughout the countdown, with no technical issues.
