Bob Schieffer has my vote for quote of the year so far.

"Before long, Congress will be leaving on its summer vacation," Bob Schieffer of CBS News said two weeks ago. "My question is, how will we know they are gone?"

1. eons ago, on the old "huntley-brinkley report", one of them --brinkley, if
memory serves, pointed out that congress used to adjourn in may--primarily because there was no air conditioning, and DC was basically a furnace in the summer. the advent of a/c allowed congress to stay in session longer. he advocated turning off the a/c and making congress go home and deal with the constituents AT HOME--a sentiment with which I heartily agree.

3. That's a fine thought, but...
All they do is have fund-raisers and maybe a town meeting or two. Then there are all those junkets to foreign lands paid for by lobbyists. Oh my, so much to do and so little time!

It's a different Congress now than when Huntley and Brinkley were reporting. Congress may have been "do nothing" at times in the past, but now it is much more sinister, IMHO.

5. What a great memory! I am delivering this to Dad, who,
along with Mom, weaned me and my siblings on Huntley and Brinkley.

4. I agree Bob parties with elite himself, but he stills manages a certain
level of objectivity. Unlike Russert. Katie is I guess fine on a light news program, but I don't have any interest in seeing her do the news every night. I have seen some of her inane interviews before.

7. Indeed, he is 1000x better than Katie...
Ive watched cbs evening news almost exclusively since I was 'old enough' to watch news, but that will drastically change when Couric is let on the set.
