in the know.
i have not logged onto this site in a long time (last as I can recall, it is progressive site).

http://www.bluelemur.com/

error 403: Forbidden!

The server understood the request, but is refusing to fulfill it. Authorization will not help and the request SHOULD NOT be repeated.

3. It looks as though someone is creating a "personal" error page
rather than what most servers put up. Unfortunately, they've made it their home page, i.e., their index file.

17. Not exactly
Compare:
http://www.bluelemur.com
http://www.bluelemur.com/sldkjflksd
http://www.bluelemur.com/index.php

The first is a 403 error (that's not just a document saying "error" getting returned; Apache is responding "403" to the client instead of "200"). That means as the web server is currently set up, nobody is authorized to view the document root.

The second is a 404 error, meaning you asked for a document that was not specified. In general, 403 takes precedence over 404, so the admin's error is probably just for the root directory...

This suspiscion is confirmed by the third error, which is a PHP error (as far as Apache is concerned the request is fine), and clients are authorized to view it. It's just that the scripting engine is getting something wrong.

My guess? The admin made a permissions or conf file screw up and hasn't noticed it yet.

21. Actually, the "error" page is not served up by the server at all.
It is "hard coded" into the html tags, as seen when going to the link and "viewing source" of the page:

<!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN">

<title>error!</title>

22. Huh?
If you got it, it was served up by the server. I don't understand your point. That is the HTML page the web server responds with, but it is not responding

HTTP 200 OK

but rather

HTTP 403

And then hands out that document as its preset 403 response.

and probably means the site is down for maintenance or the site owner has gotten burned out and taken it down completely.

8. The server's admin screwed up; nothing to worry about
That usually means the admin messed up the permissions on the web directory and Apache can't read the files, or that (s)he messed up the allow/deny rules for clients.

11. Blue Lemur (Raw Story sister forum) has been closed
Raw Story Media to end run of sister site BlueLemur.com

Raw Story Media will begin a process to fold Blue Lemur.com into the flagship RawStory.com site Monday, chairman John Byrne announced today.

The move, designed to improve and clarify the brand image of Raw Story, is being made to ensure that readers aren't confused about the origin of news stories.

"We're making the move at the suggestion of our readers and journalists who have expressed confusion about the relationship between Blue Lemur and Raw Story," Byrne said.

23. It's just saying that the failure is not temporary
It's a poorly-worded error page, but the point is that it wasn't a server overload or other temporary failure.
