Anyone seen Beetle Baily today?
I read it in the (hard copy) paper this morning, and about died. Its not normally known for political commentary.

Panel one: Beetle reading paper, notices pro- General Halftrack letter.

Panel two: Beetle's friend at a typewriter, says "I heard the Pentagon was paying for favorable stories."

4. I make it a habit not to read cartoons not drawn by their creators
Edited on Tue Jan-17-06 02:49 PM by Ezlivin
Maybe it's the speech that Bill Watterson gave at Ohio State University that made me think that way.

But I'll take a look at today's Beetle Bailey today.

Thanks and a tip of the hat!

9. I thought I'd have a heart attack.
I read the comics every day, and people who don't might be surprised at the amount of antiwar and antibush commentary the artists are putting "mainstream" comics.

I'd cite some examples, but can't remember them right now.

11. Its more than just the usual 'political' comics
everyone expects Doonsbury and Boondocks to be political. But lately there have been many anti-war/anti-bush comments from unexpected places.

Non-sequiteur
pearls before swine
fox trot

even Funky Winkerbean had an extended story about Afghanistan.

13. I see you're as dedicated to the comics as I am.
Have been since I was a kid.

I go ballistic on the Hartford paper when they try to downsize my Sunday Funnies.

10. I remember "Peanuts" getting political about Vietnam
Edited on Tue Jan-17-06 03:17 PM by ThoughtCriminal
I wish I could find a reference since my memory can get unreliable, but IIRC, Snoopy returned to the Daisy Hill Puppy Farm to give a graduation speech and there was a riot over the Army buying puppies to send to Vietnam.

On edit:
The reason behind the riot at the Daisy Hill Puppy Farm -- "War dogs being sent to Viet Nam, and then not getting back" -- is, I think, based on a real story that was in the news at the time: people were donating their dogs to the war effort, and then discovering that the dogs got left behind in the jungle, put to sleep, or given to the South Vietnamese army.

Unfortunately the link to the strips is dead.
