His meal time manners and vocabulary are nothing new in the world of politics. A lot worse happens all the time. My nation's most revered leader, Trudeau, routinely told opponents to fuck off, twirled piroettes behind the Queen, dissed the leaders of other nations (in particular Nixon), and once even gave the finger to all of Western Canada. During a crisis in Quebec, Trudeau quite famously taunted and argued a CBC reporter into the dirt over the imposition of martial law. At least Bush *was* discussing the issues with Blair at lunch, came to the conclusion that perhaps Rice should be sent for some shuttle diplomacy, confirmed that in his mind it's not entirely Lebanon's fault that Hezzbullah are ensconced in Southern Lebanon, figured that Anan was probably motivated by interests other than his and Blair's, and so on. Travel, also, is one of the things that constantly seems to startle even seasoned politicians--in particular when they travel to the far east or to Russia. That's nothing interesting either.
I think that picking on Bush's obvious charater traits merely obfuscates the real debates. It's just idiotic character chatter. You see, if Bush does something even remotely stupid, then we attack him for being a braindead retard, and then the Repukes respond on that issue. Anything that takes debate away from the key issues and focuses on character merely give the Repukes an out. They don't have to debate the issues. It's gotta stop. If we don't maintain focus, we will lose again. We must stay on track.
Why are we attacking him for speaking with his mouth full of food when the American dollar has collapsed against almost every single world currency? Why are we attacking him for saying "shit" when the education and health care of the country is in ruins? Why are we ridiculing his idiotic comments on world tavel when Iraq is a festering shithole eating up American lives?
It irritates me so much that we are losing sight of the puck and playing the man. That strategy doesn't work if the man is protected by goons. It's an old hockey truism. Play the puck. Say it's 1984, you skate out onto the ice and see Wayne Gretzky with the puck, so you crosscheck him into the boards. The next thing you know, Dave Cementhead is beating your ass to the ice and you're both heading off for game misconducts while Gretzky gets three more goals.
And if you think that Clinton and Carville didn't have some pretty colorful discussions, you're probably deluded. Those guys talk plain, but are probably a little more cagey around a microphone (something you should always assume is on).
