A great story about the Ku Klux Klan in NC:
I am from NC, and am concentrating this semester on Native American Religions...so I have particular interest in this story.

http://www.lib.unc.edu/ncc/ref/nchistory/jan2005/jan05.html

My favorite part:

The rally was scheduled for the night of January 18, 1958, in a field near Maxton, N.C. The stated purpose of the gathering was, in the words of Catfish Cole, "to put the Indians in their place, to end race mixing." The time and location of rally was not kept secret, and word spread quickly among the local Lumbee population.

Reports vary about the number of people gathered on that cold night, but there were thought to have been around a hundred Klan members. They brought a large banner emblazoned with "KKK" and a portable generator, which powered a public address system and a single bare light bulb. When the meeting began, the arc of the dim light didn't spread far enough for the Klansmen to see that they were surrounded by as many as a thousand Lumbees............

1. That's fuckin fantastic
Nobody has suffered white oppression like the Native American. Say what you will about slavery it was awful and horrific but imo the Native American got the worst of it.

Nice to know they showed these sons a bitches who the real tresspassers are.

2. I like this part :
"The Ku Klux Klan was active in North Carolina into the 1960s, but they never held another public meeting in Robeson County."

This is what DEMOCRACY looks like !

4. I thought about that too
It made me think about the number of people at the march in DC a few months ago, and what Bush and the Gang would have done if WE DID NOT GO HOME.

6. the thought of "Catfish" running away and hiding in the woods ...
This really brightens my day! I hope he tripped and fell in the mud a few times. (The KKK go on a lot about "mud people", don't they!)

10. Reminds me of the trial of a white supremist acting as his own attorney

He had the right to have the assigned judge removed from the case, which he did because he felt his name sounded too Jewish. He was given the name a judge who sounded more Irish, which he was happy about--until he found out that the new judge was black!!! Fool for a client!

13. It was from an episode of City Confidential on A&E cable.

It was one of the last ones that Paul Winfield narrated, and I must say that he got in quite a chuckle before he delivered the punch line! The black judge's name was Hagerty.

On edit: I found a link to a review of a book written about the case--it happened in 1988 in Portland, Oregon.

14. It really happened, and Malvina Reynolds wrote a great song about it
BATTLE OF MAXTON FIELD
words and music by Malvina Reynolds
c 1958 by Schroder Music Co.

Now brave the Klansmen rallied there In Maxton town that night.
All armed with knives and pistol guns and honin' for a fight.
Oh, rally round, you Klansmen bold, but do not show your face.
We'll burn the fiery cross tonight and save the Nordic race.

Chorus:
Oh, the Klan, Oh the Klan
It calls on ev'ry red blood fighting man
Who is free and white and bigot, gets his courage from a spigot,
And protects his racial purity the very best he can.

...

Another shot, the light went out, there was a moment's hush,
Then a hundred thousand Lumbee boys came screaming from the brush.
Well, maybe not a million quite, but surely more than four,
And the Klansmen shook from head to foot and headed for the door.

The Lumbee Indians whooped and howled in the ancient Lumbee way,
And the Klansmen melted off the ground like snow on a sunny day.
Our histories will long record that perilous advance,
When many a Klansman left the field with buckshot in his pants.
...

Much more to the lyrics here:

Reynolds was something. She began her career in her 60s, had her songs recorded by Pete Seeger and others. Last night they played a snippet of her "Little Boxes" on the Globe award show. "And they all look like ticky tacky and they all look just the same..."

I was fortunate enough to find one of her albums for a dollar in a bin in the 60s. It is still one of my favorites. (Piece of grooved plastic in a dust bin, $1.00. Little old white lady trashing the Klan - priceless.)

16. That reminds me of a story I read about the Kishnev Pogrom.
In 1903 47 Jews were killed in the Russian/Modovan city of Kishnev when the local population went on a long Pogrom against the Jewish community. They lynched and beat people to death (mostly the elderly and children) with clubs. On the second day, the union of Schochets (Kosher butchers) showed up in the middle of the Jewish quarter with all their knives, formed a circle and dared the rioters to attack them. At this point, to paraphrase Monty Python, the anti-Semite murderers bravely turned tail and ran. Unfortunately, they got the local army and gendarme to disperse the kosher butches with guns and the Pogrom continued.

21. I forwarded this story to my 80 year old aunt
My aunt is the history buff of the family...she sent me a funny story about her grandparents and the Klan, that happened in the 1920s here in Ohio.

In the 1920's the Klan was strong in Ohio My grandparents (staunch Presbyterians) were against the immigration of Catholic workers from Eastern Europe and decided to attend a Klan meeting in Campbell, Ohio, near Youngstown where they lived. My Grandfather was a quiet, peaceful soul and I suspect this was my Grandmother's doing - she was Scots-Irish descent and very anti-Catholic (Papist) and hated the Pope. My grandfather had a car at his disposal but he could not drive. My Aunt Elizabeth was the only one in the family that could drive and she had to take my 2 year old cousin, Emily, with her. As they drove into the parking lot Emily saw herself surrounded by "ghosts" and screamed so loudly they had to turn around and leave. Emily saved the family honor. This whole thing was so ridiculous - my Grandfather was the chief accountant for a large factory and the people that kept him working were the immigrant factory hands.
