French-chartered ship leaves Beirut with 1,250 evacuees
BEIRUT (AFP) - A ship chartered by the French government left the Lebanese capital for the Mediterranean island of Cyprus with some 1,250 evacuees fleeing the Israeli onslaught on Lebanon on board, an AFP correspondent witnessed.

The French foreign ministry said that 300 of the 800 French nationals on board were children.

The ship was also carrying some 400 nationals of other European Union member states and around 50 Americans.

"More than 8,000 people, most of them French, have contacted the French embassy in Beirut to ask for assistance in leaving," said Lieutenant Colonel Stephane Vogelsinger, a military attache at the embassy.
