Israel may deploy Barak anti-missile system in Haifa Bay
http://www.haaretz.com/hasen/spages/739778.html

The Israel Navy began evaluating the possibility yesterday that guided missile vessels could be deployed in the Haifa Bay to provide a defensive shield against rockets fired by Hezbollah in Lebanon against targets in Haifa and its environs.

The vessels would be equiped with the Barak anti-missile system normally carried by advanced navy ships, such as the Saar-5 and Saar-4.5 class destroyers. The Navy's department for armaments and the Defense Ministry's Weapons Development Authority are responsible for the evaluation, which is considered urgent.

If the Barak system is used to target advanced forms of Katyusha rockets and Fajr missiles, it will be guided by land-based radar, including Green Pine, the radar for the Arrow anti-missile batteries.

A spokesperson for the Defense Ministry, Rachel Ashkenazi, said yesterday that "urgent efforts are being made to use different systems that are relevant to countering the rockets. The systems are in place and are in use
snip...
The sources blamed the failure to develop a dedicated anti-rocket system on complacency and mistaken budgetary considerations, including the wish to fund the project with U.S. aid money instead of developing an indigenous system. The latter consideration forced Israel to waste precious time in finding U.S. partners for Israeli firms and waiting for Pentagon and Congressional approval.

A senior officer said yesterday that the lethal Katyusha attacks on Haifa could have been prevented.

I wonder why the Pentagon and Congress dragged its feet...???
from other sources from Israel

6. Be interesting to see if it works.
It's gonna be hard to find and track a missle that has a range of 40 miles I think.

"it will be guided by land-based radar, including Green Pine, the radar for the Arrow anti-missile batteries."

11. No - it is an Israeli developed and manufactured missile as is the
anti-missile system - but it can't handle tiny missiles which is why the ship off the coast of Lebanon was hit.

Barak was/is an Israeli ground based, mobile or stationary air defense system using the Barak Vertical Launch Missile. The system provided hemispherical coverage against aircraft, helicopters, cruise missiles, UAVs and stand-off munitions. A proven anti-missile capability was claimed. The system contained 12 missiles, and could be operated either alone or netted with other firing units. The radar used narrow beam Ka frequency band, providing good ECCM immunity. The highly automated system allowed instant response with a fully computerized firing sequence and had minimal personnel requirements. It was purchased by India for India's ships.

Manufacturer: Rafael Armaments. Location: Haifa, Israel. Total Mass: 98 kg (216 lb). Core Diameter: 0.18 m (0.60 ft). Total Length: 2.13 m (7.00 ft). Span: 0.67 m (2.20 ft). Standard warhead mass: 22 kg (48 lb). Maximum range: 11 km (6 mi). Boost Propulsion: Solid rocket. Guidance: Command to line of sight / Semi-Active Radar Homing. Maximum speed: 2,030 kph (1,260 mph). Minimum range: 1.30 km (0.80 mi).

14. thank for the info.....I guess the Israelis are getting military hardware
...from the US and India. I was wondering why the US was so nice to the Indians...selling hardware to the Israelis is one favor we can return, of course.

16. It is the other way around-the Israelis are competitors to USwho developed
their own missile - and then missile system - and then missile defense system - when they saw how poorly the two US developed systems worked (in Gulf War One under daddy Bush the Patriot missile system MISSED 50 slow Iraq missiles out of 50 tries - as usual during the war we were told it was hitting everything - and as usual our media lied).

The US lost the sale to India because the Israeli missile and missile defense system works much better than the US system we were trying to sell.

Israel does get military hardware from the US - because it must since the US FOREIGN AID MONEY" TO iSRAEL IS NOT IN CASH BUT IN CREDITS TOWARD PURCHASE OF US WEAPONS - the US aid to Israel is really money going straight to the GOP's favorite military industrial companies.

But the hardware that works is the stuff they invent and build on their own.
