John Dean interview- nails G. Liddy, Barbara Olsen, Gingrich, Xtian right
Edited on Tue Jul-18-06 01:46 AM by Cell Whitman
Excellent interview...

Dean discusses how he and Goldwater wondered WTF happened with conservatives when they were throwing garbage at the Big Dog. Talks about G. Gordon Liddy being the slimeball of slimeballs. (no surprise there) Talks about Barbara Olsen and the Clinton slime network and the fraud of "activist" judges. Lays the religious right open and what Piece O'Poop Gingrich is.

Jokes that Nixon would run as a Green today....mainly discusses conservatives affinity for authoritarianism.

really good from Kathleen Dunn...

1. Goldwater
Edited on Tue Jul-18-06 01:26 AM by Cell Whitman
http://www.azcentral.com/specials/special25/articles/0531goldwater2.html

Conservative pioneer became an outcast

It was difficult to picture, but by the time he reached his mid-80s, Barry Goldwater had become something of an outcast in the political movement that he pioneered.

Though he continued his support of a strong national defense, Goldwater aggravated so many conservatives on other issues that some in Arizona once suggested stripping his name from party headquarters.

He confounded them on many issues:

* Goldwater had won support of abortion opponents in his 1980 U.S. Senate re-election campaign, but in his final term, he voted consistently to uphold the 1973 Supreme Court ruling that legalized abortion. Later in life, he was honored by Planned Parenthood.

* In 1981, Goldwater assailed the founder of the Moral Majority, the Rev. Jerry Falwell. Responding to Falwell's statement that all good Christians should be concerned about the Supreme Court nomination of Arizonan Sandra Day O'Connor, he said, ''I think every good Christian ought to kick Falwell right in the ass.''

* In 1987, Goldwater, who had described then Gov. Evan Mecham as ''hardheaded,'' called on the Republican maverick to resign.

* In 1989, Goldwater said the Republican Party had been taken over by a ''bunch of kooks,'' a reference to forces supporting TV evangelist Pat Robertson and Mecham.

* In 1992, he endorsed Democrat Karan English for Congress over Republican Doug Wead.

* In June 1993, Goldwater declared that the military should lift its ban on gays in the military. He also railed against discrimination against gays and lesbians in the workplace. ...

Kolbe, who began his political career as a page for Goldwater in the U.S. Senate, said, ''Both the party and the whole world around him changed . . . but I'm not sure he changed all that much.''

Goldwater may have put it best in 1992, when he revealed his contempt for a new conservative movement focused on fellow Republican Jesse Helms of North Carolina.

''I don't like being called the New Right; I'm an old, old son-of-a-bitch. I'm a conservative,'' he said.

3. IT'S THE CONSERVATISM STUPID!!!
IT'S THE CONSERVATISM STUPID!!!

http://www.tompaine.com/articles/2006/07/12/its_the_conservatism_stupid.php

1. Conservatism has failed. The overwhelming majority of the American public now sees the Bush administration as a failure. They failed in Iraq, they failed after Hurricane Katrina, they failed on health care, they failed to deliver rising wages, they failed on the deficit, they failed, they failed, they failed. Why? Liberals need to argue that it wasn’t a product of incompetence, it was a failure of conservative governance....

Conservatives had their chance: a Republican president, a Republican Congress, Republican-appointed courts—in short, the perfect environment for enacting their vision with little to stand in their way—and they failed. Should we be surprised at the level of corruption? Of course not; they don’t think government is there to serve the people, so why shouldn’t they raid it for whatever they can grab?

In short, progressives should start talking about the Bush administration’s failures not as those of a president, but of an ideology. ...

2. Conservatism is the ideology of the past—a past we don’t want to return to. Liberals need to embrace the culture war, because we’re winning. ...

3. Conservatives are cowards, and they hope you are, too. We’re afraid, they shout. We’re so afraid of terrorists, we have to become more like the things we hate. We’re so afraid, we have to let our government sanction torture. We’re so afraid, we have to let the government spy on us. We’re so afraid, we have to give the president dictatorial powers. We’re so afraid, we just want to rush to the arms of politicians who say they’ll protect us.

Progressives need to frame their rejection of the fear campaign as an act of courage: Al-Qaida does not scare us, and we will not dismantle our democratic system because we are afraid. The America we love does not cower in fear, as the conservatives want it to. ...

The key challenge facing progressives right now is how—once George W. Bush decamps for Crawford in January of 2009—to maintain the increased energy motivating the political left in recent years . They will be able to do so if they come to understand that George W. Bush is not what they need to fight. What they need to fight is conservatism.

13. great little article by Paul Waldman wasn't it?
this one by Lakoff and associates is also good. I know we get to running around in circles trying to define the right. They are corporatists and theocrats for instance, but it is all rooted into what has become today's conservatism.

point is - Bush will not be running in '08 nor is he running in all the congressional races.... We need to define the problem as it is, the conservative mindset and belief system. Otherwise they WILL just put some lipstick on a pig like McCain and tell everyone he is the "new and improved conservative" and the nation will fall for the same BS. Even if we were to gain the congress, which I will believe when I see it, if they have the WH we lose the Supreme Court for decades - it already has problems. But again, all the congressional districts need to understand how detrimental to the nation's future conservatism is.

http://www.rockridgeinstitute.org/research/lakoff/incompetent

Progressives have fallen into a trap. Emboldened by President Bush’s plummeting approval ratings, progressives increasingly point to Bush’s “failures” and label him and his administration as incompetent. Self-satisfying as this criticism may be, it misses the bigger point. Bush’s disasters — Katrina, the Iraq War, the budget deficit — are not so much a testament to his incompetence or a failure of execution. Rather, they are the natural, even inevitable result of his conservative governing philosophy. It is conservatism itself, carried out according to plan, that is at fault.

6. Goldwater from the congressional record 1981
Source: Congressional Record, September 16, 1981
"However, on religious issues there can be little or no compromise. There is no position on which people are so immovable as their religious beliefs. There is no more powerful ally one can claim in a debate than Jesus Christ, or God, or Allah, or whatever one calls this supreme being. But like any powerful weapon, the use of God's name on one's behalf should be used sparingly. The religious factions that are growing throughout our land are not using their religious clout with wisdom. They are trying to force government leaders into following their position 100 percent.

If you disagree with these religious groups on a particular moral issue, they complain, they threaten you with a loss of money or votes or both. I'm frankly sick and tired of the political preachers across this country telling me as a citizen that if I want to be a moral person, I must believe in 'A,' 'B,' 'C,' and 'D.' Just who do they think they are? And from where do they presume to claim the right to dictate their moral beliefs to me? And I am even more angry as a legislator who must endure the threats of every religious group who thinks it has some God-granted right to control my vote on every roll call in the Senate. I am warning them today: I will fight them every step of the way if they try to dictate their moral convictions to all Americans in the name of 'conservatism.' " Barry Goldwater Source: Congressional Record, September 16, 1981

I will fight them every step of the way if they try to dictate their moral convictions to all Americans in the name of 'conservatism.'"

Sadly, Barry lost the fight.

18. barbara olson was one of the worst of the worst. Dean mentions
on the show how he overheard (and then had her BRAG about it) Olson getting her talking points in the Green Room at MSNBC before they went on the air. she discussed their NETWORK that 'monitors all the channels', etc., so that they have their talking points in order

this is KEY to their spreading their unified message, and something that the dems ignore at their peril, because they choose NOT, for whatever reasons, to emulate them
