Colorado GOP attacks Schiavo, Dems using Toddler with Bloody ProtestPoster

Here is the offending image:

Here's the story about how the Colorado GOP seemingly laid in wait for Michael Schiavo to attend a fundraiser for Peggy Lamm, and it appears they arranged for some unhinged right-wingers to show up and disrupt the press conference in as ugly a manner as possible:

http://www.dailykos.com/storyonly/2006/7/16/19411/5809

Then the Colorado GOP chair isssued a public statement condemning Michael Schiavo for making money off of his wife's death. (Hence the "blood money" sign held by the toddler.)

Will Bob Martinez, the Colorado GOP chair, condemn these conservatives for raising "blood money" using Terri's name?

In the lowest blow of all, <b>Jerry Falwell’s Traditional Values Coalition</b> has sent out a press release declaring that <b>“Terri’s death </b>will not be in vain.” Not be in vain? What is that supposed to mean?
<b>Well, the press release ends with the following call to action: “Please become an active supporter of the Traditional Values Coalition by pledging a monthly gift. Do more than just read our newsletters and shake your head at the terrible things happening to our country… PLEDGE HERE”</b>
So THAT’s how Terri Schiavo’s life is not in vain! Apparently, Jerry Falwell and his fellow right wingers believe that God put Terri Schiavo through ten years of ghoulishly prolonged death just so that fringe fundamentalist groups could rake in the cash with a new round of fundraising letters. God works in mysterious ways…

Schiavo's Brother Campaigns with Randall Terry

By Etan Horowitz
http://www.orlandosentinel.com/news/local/state/orl-vterry0106jul01,0,3508098.story?coll=orl-news-headlines-state
Terri Schiavo's brother campaigned Friday with anti-abortion activist Randall Terry, who has been evoking Schiavo's death in his bid to oust veteran state Sen. Jim King.
Friday's appearances by Bobby Schindler were the first time a member of Schiavo's family has publicly campaigned for Terry, who served as the family's spokesman during the battle to keep her alive.
At the first of a series of five events throughout District 8, which stretches from Daytona Beach to north of Jacksonville, Schindler blamed King for his sister's death and credited Terry with trying to save her life.

Santorum raised 100K on Fla. trip during Schiavo fight
Friday, April 22, 2005
Associated Press

WASHINGTON -- Sen. Rick Santorum collected more than $100,000 from Florida donors during the first three months of 2005, when the Pennsylvania Republican maintained a high profile in the fight over Terri Schiavo.
Santorum received the bulk of the money -- $84,300 -- on March 31, the day the Florida woman died, according to an analysis by PoliticalMoneyLine, a campaign finance tracking group. The $84,300 was raised during campaign stops March 29 and 30 in four Florida cities, the group said.
While in Florida on March 29, Santorum prayed outside Schiavo's hospice room with her parents, Robert and Mary Schindler. Santorum was back in Washington when Schiavo, 41, died.
According to PoliticalMoneyLine, Santorum's campaign reported receiving $104,500 from individual donors and political action committees in Florida during the first three months of this year. Of the total received the day Schiavo died, about $42,000 came from a March 29 dinner in the Miami area. The rest largely came from fund-raisers in Tampa, Orlando and Palm Beach sponsored by groups such as the executives of Revlon and the PAC of Outback Steakhouse.

Santorum's Florida Cash Grab Spells Hypocrisy?
PA Dem Chair Rooney Challenges Sen. Santorum to Return Schiavo
Money? ?HARRISBURG, PA: Calling his recent fundraising trip to Florida "one ugly?example of why Pennsylvanians are going to deliver Rick Santorum a pink?slip," Pennsylvania Democratic Party Chair T.J. Rooney today called on?Santorum to return the $250,000 in political contributions he raised?during his Schiavo junket.?
Days earlier, Santorum canceled a Social Security town hall meeting in?Tampa "out of respect" for the Schiavo family, but Santorum had no?problem going to Tampa anyway, wining and dining big money political?donors just hours after visiting Terry Schiavo's family.? ?
"Sen. Santorum's conscience stops when it comes to campaign cash," said?state Rep. T. J. Rooney. "If Santorum truly wants to show respect to the?Schiavo family, he should return the political money he raised while?hypocritically grandstanding at Terry Schiavo's deathbed."?"This is a character test for Senator Santorum," added Rooney.?
?Santorum traveled to Tampa on Wal-Mart's corporate jet under the?auspices of pitching President Bush's plan to privatize Social Security,? but the town hall meeting was already canceled "out of respect" for ?Schiavo's family. Santorum even showed up, without invitation, to meet? with Schiavo's parents the day before she died then went on national TV?to grandstand about the tragic case.
? ?Always crafty, Santorum told MSNBC-TV, he was in Florida because, "I had? other plans too - and other meetings." What he didn't say was the plans? and "meetings" were fund-raisers for his '06 re-election effort.?
?"Santorum has reached a new low in the annals of double standards and?raw political opportunism," Rooney said. "He should admit poor? judgment, and return the tainted money. If the tragedy was so important ?to Rick Santorum that he canceled his policy meetings, he wouldn't have? used the opportunity to dig deep into the pockets of his donors to try ?to make his own wallet fat."?

On Trip to Visit Schiavo Family, Santorum Canceled Social Security Town Hall Because It Would Be "Inappropriate" But Had No Problem Raising $$$ for His Campaign. During his highly-publicized trip to Florida to visit Terry Schiavo's family at her hospice, Santorum cancelled a scheduled town hall meeting on Social Security "out of respect for the Schiavo and Schindler family" because it was not "appropriate to go into the region and do a big policy event at this time." But, as the Philadelphia Inquirer reported, Santorum "pulled in about $85,000" for his re-election campaign while he was on the trip. The Philadelphia Daily News reported that Santorum's campaign put the figure at $250,000. "There was a luncheon in Orlando and a dinner in Miami on March 29 with Florida Sen. Mel Martinez, a luncheon in Tampa March 30 hosted by Outback Steakhouse, which is headquartered there, and a dinner that night in Palm Beach hosted by execs from Revlon."

The Pennsylvania senator was going to hold a forum on Social Security while in Florida, but "out of respect" for the Schiavo tragedy, Santorum decided it would be inappropriate to "do a big policy event." But as Capitol Buzz and Political Wire noted, Santorum saw nothing wrong with some lucrative fundraising during the same trip.
Santorum told MSNBC-TV, according to the March 30 "Hardball" transcript, he was in Florida because, "I had other plans to - and other meetings." (Schiavo died March 31.) What he didn't say was the plans and "meetings" were fund-raisers for his '06 re-election effort.
There was a luncheon in Orlando and a dinner in Miami on March 29 with Florida Sen. Mel Martinez, a luncheon in Tampa March 30 hosted by Outback Steakhouse, which is headquartered there, and a dinner that night in Palm Beach hosted by execs from Revlon.
The trip was made on a Wal-Mart jet paid for by Santorum's campaign fund.
Total take, according to Santorum finance director Rob Bickhart, was about $250,000 (en route to an April 15 FEC filing expected to show the senator with close to $3 million already).

1. I see Bush uses "code words" to refer to Terri in his fundraising speeches
What do you think?

Text of Bush speech at Musgrave fundraiser
Wednesday, November 30, 2005
Here is a transcript of President Bush’s remarks at Tuesday’s fundraiser for Rep. Marilyn Musgrave, as provided by the White House.
Thank you all. Thanks for the warm welcome. Thanks for the invitation, Marilyn. I am here because Marilyn Musgrave is a great Congresswoman. (Applause.) And she deserves to be reelected to the United States Congress. (Applause.)

I’m also proud of the fact that she stands up for values that she thinks important. It’s really important for the United States of America to promote a culture of life, to be a welcoming society — (applause) — to recognize the value of each person. Marilyn is a strong supporter of developing a culture of life. And she’s a strong supporter of the sanctity of marriage — (applause) — who supported a constitutional amendment to make sure that activist judges do not redefine traditional marriage. And I’m proud of your support of that important piece of legislation, Marilyn. And the people of this district ought to send her back to Washington, D.C. because she shares the same values as most people in Colorado. (Applause.)

President's Remarks at Talent for Senate Dinner ?The Millennium Hotel St. Louis?St. Louis, Missouri

6:05 P.M. CDT
THE PRESIDENT: Thank you all for coming. (Applause.) Thanks for the warm welcome. Please be seated. (Applause.) My arm still hurts from the last time -- or one of the last times I came to St. Louis. I tried to fire a 90-mile-an-hour fast ball on opening day -- (laughter) -- got up there about 60, maybe. (Laughter.) But I love coming to your town. Thanks for having me. Thank you all, those of you who have traveled -- (applause) -- I want to thank those of you who traveled from outside this great city of St. Louis to come to support Talent.

I appreciate Jim's willingness to join me in promoting a culture of life in America. I want to thank Jim for helping defend the institution of marriage from being redefined by activist judges. (Applause.) And speaking about judges -- (laughter) -- I want to thank both Senators from Missouri for understanding that every nominee a President sends up must have a fair hearing in the Judiciary Committee, an expeditious hearing in the Judiciary Committee, and then an up or down vote on the floor of the United States Senate. (Applause.)

5. "Culture of Life " is Code for Anti-Abortion
It's from Karol Wojtyla's hateful, anti-woman 1995 encyclical Evangelium Vitae.

6. Thank you for these examples. . .
it only underscores just how innately hypocritical and ethically immoral these Fundy faves are. . .anyone's life. . .anyone's family. . .means nothing but a means to make money.
