White supremacist groups organize anti-immigration rallies...

Online 'white pride' groups behind anti-immigration rallies
July 16, 2006

NASHUA, N.H. --Two online "white pride" groups organized recent anti-immigration rallies in Nashua and Hudson, and one activist was arrested, police said.

Members of an online forum run by North East White Pride demonstrated in front of Nashua City Hall on June 11. The group was dispersed by police, who arrested Seth Banks, 21, of Belmont, on misdemeanor charges of disorderly conduct and resisting arrest.

Banks is scheduled to be arraigned Tuesday in Nashua District Court.

Members of North East White Pride and White Revolution also gathered in Library Park in Hudson several times in the past few months, most recently on July 2. The Hudson police chief made national news when he followed the New Ipswich police chief in arresting illegal immigrants on trespassing charges.

Members of the online forums say their demonstrations have been well-received.

"New Hampshire residents love us up there," said a posting on the North East White Pride forum by someone using the screen-name Ctskinhead88, who also runs a blog called Connecticut Skinhead. "They respond with thumbs up and blasting car horns. It lets us know our message was received."

Robert Trestan, Northeast civil rights counsel with the Anti-Defamation League, said white supremacist groups are using widespread anti-immigration sentiment to recruit new members.

1. The immigration debate is pretty racist at heart
I'm an immigrant. I'm a white Canadian. I came in on a K1 visa to marry an American. I had met a nice woman when I was a visiting professor at a university in Connecticut, and we fell in love etc. After a year of dating, I went back to my home university in Vancouver, but we couldn't just end our relationship, and so decided to get married. Since she makes about twice what I make, it was decided that I'd move to the States instead of her moving to Canada. We applied for the K1 and after a year, it was granted and I came into the country and got married, believing at the time, that I could come and go from the US as I saw fit, and would have time to arrange for the timely joining of our two households--you know, sell the old furniture, box up the artwork, stuff like that. Unfortunately, I was trapped. When you apply for an I-485 Change of Status (Greencard), you cannot leave the country for *any* reason during the processing or you have deemed to have abandoned your claim (true story, no one ever gets advanced parole during a 485 change of status). Anyhow, within 3 weeks I had landed a tenure track job at a large public university in New York.

I took a job away from an American. I took an exceptionally high-paying, professional job away from an American. And probably not just one American but hundreds of Americans. Everyone who applied for my job, after all, had a PhD and a good track record, so pretty much any of us would have done just fine; but I was chosen.

Why don't these anti-immigration people complain about me? I took a job that pays probably 10 times what a gardener or a car wash attendant or a dishwasher makes. I also took a job that a highly qualified and educated American wanted, a job that is government funded.

I figure that the reason no one complains about me is because I'm white and I speak flawless English. I don't think it's got anything to do with immigration per se, just racism and perhaps classism (which is, after all, the real root of all evil).

2. You came here legally...
that's why. I think these people are really concerned about illegal immigration, not immigration in general.

4. Many immigrants come legally on some sort of
Visa...some tend to stay after their Visa has expired, thus they are illegal immigrants. Like the original poster said, he's white and speaks English.

3. My grandmother came here to steal floor scrubbing jobs.
From Ireland, via England, via Canada. Most immigrants "steal" someone else's possible job. Hell, the Pilgrims stole the Indians jobs when they started hunting "their" deer and planting "their" fields.

5. Excellent post...
It's often unspoken, but it looms huge in this whole debate, whether or not people will admit it. I think there is a real fear among some about a minority-majority America, which will happen sometime in the next 40 years.

6. they are coming to our town aug 5th. they got the publicity
just a small group, going from town to town. the anti group hugely outnumbers this small group of pathetic. btw, they are kkk, not white supremacy. they are here to get the attention. i am going to rally but on the other hand, i think it would be more productive for no one to go. let them stand out there by their lonely pathetic self without any attention what so ever. the black community and naacp and other orgs are challenging them, though. so i feel the responsibility to bolster their numbers.

9. Some of them are--but "nativist" & "xenophobe" may be more accurate.
John Tanton is widely recognized as the leading figure in the anti-immigration and "official English" movements in the United States. Initially, Tanton's public policy advocacy work was driven by his commitment to zero population growth and environmental conservation. By the late 1970s, however, this concern about the environment and population growth evolved into a crusade against immigration flows into the United States, particularly from Latin American and Caribbean nations. At the time that the New Right, Christian Right, and neoconservative political tendencies were mobilizing new constituencies against center-left politics in the United States, Tanton played a central role in mobilizing backlash sentiment against immigrants. Tapping his base in environmental and population control organizations such as the Sierra Club, National Audubon Society, and Zero Population Growth, Tanton in 1979 cofounded what has become the most influential anti-immigrant policy institute in the nation: Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR). In 1983, he also cofounded the most influential "official English" or English-only organization, U.S. English.

Today, Tanton stands in the center of a web of anti-immigrant and official English groups. As the founder and publisher of Social Contract Press, Tanton has published books that have helped shaped a nationalist ideology focused on the threat of immigrants to the white, English-speaking population. Social Contract books also stoke fears about immigrants taking over the United States, with research that highlights the rapid rise of Spanish-speaking residents and related socioeconomic problems, while ignoring research that points to the positive contributions of immigrants. In addition to FAIR, where he still is a board member, Tanton has been a central player in an array of anti-immigrant, nationalist groups and institutes, including Pro English, U.S. Inc., Center for Immigration Studies (CIS), U.S. English, and Numbers USA. Funding for these and other organizations in which Tanton is a key figure, often flows through the organization, U.S. Inc.

Some of the more "acceptable" grops founded/sponsored by Tanton supply much of the anti-immigrant spam posted here. But he's also linked to VDARE--found on the same hate-group lists as the bozos sponsoring these demonstrations.
