Lincoln Davis (D-TN) just said that divorce should be outlawed
if marriage is to be protected. He is right on. He's giving a speech on the floor of the House re: gay marriages. Said that infidelity should be felony. Taking the GOP to task for trying to score political points with their base.

1. He's not wrong
I mean if you are going to enshrine the bible as the law of the land; those are some obvious laws.

4. His speech was right on! I hope somone taped it.
He pointed out every fallacy in the RW arguments against gay marriage and specifically outlined problems in our nation which need immediate attention and affect all people.

Gingrey is making an ass of himself, as one of the 250 CATHOLIC members of Congress (his stat) who "knows something about the sacrament of marriage," and has taking to introducing supports of this nonsense by the number of years they have been married.

3. And the Republican response will be
Either (a) oh, you're just being ridiculous; or (b) give us a little more time, we're trying to figure out how to craft a law so that we can hold Democrats criminally liable, but not Republicans.

5. Don't know why people can't just follow the vows

(for those married as a sacrament of the church)

I vowed to God to be married till my death does us apart. Civil divorce, I'm still married. Her death, I'm still married. It's very simple actually.

7. Good heavens, what an illiterate moron
I guess he's never read any history his whole life unless it was Bowdlerized stories about George Washington and the cherry tree or sanitized bibles stories when he was a child.

We have divorce so that people aren't forced to remain with abusers, both substance and physical. We have no fault divorces so that people don't have to be wealthy to get away from abusers.

What needs to be changed are the laws regarding remarriage. If people had to wait five years, it would cool off a lot of prospective trophy wives or stud muffins and their desire to audition as an immediate replacement for the old, shabby spouse.

Serial polygamy has always been a problem in every culture. Some cultures allow polygamy, period. Others forbid divorce, period. Neither solution works for women and children, especially.

Divorce is unpleasant but necessary. That isn't what needs to be banned, as anyone who has escaped a truly bad marital situation knows first hand. What needs to be tightened up are the laws governing remarriage. It would be wonderful to peg it at the age the youngest child turns 18, but five years is doable.

8. Huh!? He was using this argument to make the point that
arguing that same sex marriage is a threat to traditional marriages is nonsense. Marriages end in divorce and that keeping marriages intact by outlawing divorce would be the logical conclusion of that fallacious argument. He was being satirical.

10. I think his point was that if you are trying to protect the "sanctity" of
marriage by outlawing gay marriage, you should go after the real dangers to marriage - divorce and infidelity and make them illegal as well.

He is trying to illustrate the hypocrisy in the anti-gay marriage position that they are trying to protect traditional marriage.

Divorce and run of the mill infidelity are much more destructive to marriage than gay marriage.

13. Divorce is a far greater threat to the family than gay marriage.
My neighborhood is a little bit like Peyton Place, mainly because, I think, we have two elementary schools right in the neighborhood, so everyone knows each other and therefore, knows each other's business. You wouldn't believe the infidelity that goes on here and the children who have been affected. It's a travesty.

Divorce is a necessary evil some of the time. Leaving an abusive spouse is paramount to protecting oneself, but the infidelity and lying that takes place are just shocking. Obviously, no one knows what goes on behind closed doors, but over and over what we hear is "I just wasn't happy". Sometimes, I think happiness is way overrated.
