Did anyone post on the US's back door policy about Israel and Lebanon?
Edited on Tue Jul-18-06 12:50 PM by xultar
John King on CNN reported that the US told Israel that they would have to button it down after a while but the mean time do as much damage to Hezbollah as possible while minimising civilian deaths.

Here's what I don't get. If that is the case then why give Lebanese government ultimatums on things they can't deliver. Secondly, if you have this under the table deal why allow the civilian infrastructure to be destroyed? Won't this just make the problem worse and make Hezbollah stronger?

I can't see where the deal the US made with Israel is going to make anything better. Seems to me it is making this worse and turning Hezbollah into a martyr.

1. I agree. I am confused as well by this. And what you wrote here
was confirmed by other sources -- I can't recall specifically, but I think it may even have been the Israeli Amb to UN or Netanyahu who I heard confirmed the same thing. Even on Fox this was discussed -- that essentially Israel had a certain window of opportunity before international criticism and concern would kick in.

They are destroying Lebanon's infrastructure. I do not see how that helps matters -- and I see that only backfiring and potentially contributing to H'zballah's cause.

Today, I read that they bombed the Lebanese army barracks. Why? Wouldn't it be better to support the Lebanese Army in an attempt to encourage the Lebanese Army and Gov't to rein in H'zballah?

Barracks of the Lebanese army in the hills overlooking Beirut were bombed four times overnight by Israeli jets and rescue efforts were underway. The number of casualties there was unclear. In a similar attack early Monday nine soldiers were killed.

3. Those are the very Lebonese soldiers they want to send in and stop
Hezbollah. So, I don't get how they think this is going to help the fight against Hezbollah and other terrorist organisations.

2. Look at the source (not CNN)
This way Israel gets the appearance of trying to make peace, while the whole time doing an enemy as much damage as possible. The US publicly says "do as little civilian damage as possible", making it appearer as if we don't approve of civilian casualties, when in reality I don't think * and co. give a rats hairless bottom about how many civilians die. Israel in turn claims Hezbollahs leaders "hide" amongst civilians, meaning they live with their wives and kids. And finally yes the whole mess might well in the end make Hezbollah stronger or with more support leaving the door open to possibility of all out war with Iran or Iran and Syria, but this time with public support. It is mostly a PR campaign with Lebanese civilians as pawns.

5. I agree
I kind of think Buscho WANTS Syria/Iran to intervene or perhaps even take Lebanon back over. Then Lebanon (and the rest of the so-called "free world") would need to be rescued. Bingo: The US war machine steps up to the plate.

HOW we're supposed to manage that is another question.

6. That is how
fear and hate mongering militaristic extremists stay in power everywhere, by creating usefull enemies and keeping up the cycle of violence. Ask Herman Göring.
