Nancy Reagan: "I don't give a damn about the pro-lifers."
(snip)

We also know that the president and his wife did not see eye to eye on these issues. Reagan’s chief of staff Donald Regan recounts in his memoirs that Mrs. Reagan called him to ask that anti-abortion comments be removed from a State of the Union address. Regan said that the president had especially wanted to speak about abortion. The First Lady responded, “I don’t give a damn about the right-to-lifers.”

2. Nancy was politically astute--she knew where the plumb line was
And she did a helluva job of keeping her husband from straying too far to the right. He owes his second term to her....

4. Honestly, I think Nancy Reagan was the first woman President.
She was also likely the first not actually elected by the people, followed by Bush, of course, but at least his name was on the ticket.

13. She was a co-prez in many respects, like Hillary was
But FDR had his marbles pretty well to the end. She certainly acted as his legs, and got out there to places he couldn't easily manage.

7. Edith Wilson
served a similar role -- gatekeeper, advisor, and some contend de facto president -- for her incapacitated husband.

11. Wow! I never knew that but, my grandfather and his
mother corresponded with Edith Wilson and her neice over many years- My aunt donated the letters to a museum and I never got to read them all. There were more than 2200 letters in all.

14. Really? Wow is right.
It's amazing a First Lady would (and could) keep up such a long-running correspondence with a pair of citizens. I couldn't imagine that happening anymore.

18. And she was trying for a third term for Wilson
in spite of his being bedridden and incapacitated. The Democratic Party refused to nominate him.

17. Because Ronnie was in neck deep with those clowns
Nancy may have not liked them, but she couldn't have lived in the White House without them. Ronnie courted Fundies like they'd never been wooed before. He was the crack in the dam and deserves the blame.
