Gore Says "Remember the Recount" VP still hasn't forgotten Florida

Fla. Senate: Gore Says "Remember the Recount"
Former Vice President Al Gore still hasn't forgotten about Florida.

Six years after a lengthy recount fight left Gore just shy of the electoral votes needed to claim a victory over President George W. Bush, the former vice president is weighing in on behalf of Sen. Bill Nelson (D-Fla.), who is seeking a second term in November.

"Bill's re-election campaign has become a lightning rod for many people across the country because of the personalities involved or likely to be involved in the race," Gore writes in an appeal that found its way into Democratic mailboxes over the weekend.

That "personality" to which Gore refers? None other than Rep. Katherine Harris -- the frontrunner for the GOP senate nomination or, in Gore's words, the official who was "chief architect of the 2000 Florida vote going to George Bush."

"Because you were a part of the Gore 2000 campaign team we thought you might be especially interested in this race," Gore writes. "I would like to win this one."

Gore's solicitation on behalf of Nelson comes on the heels of a speech Monday in Washington, D.C., in which he accused President Bush of "repeatedly and insistently" breaking the law by authorizing the National Security Agency to wiretap U.S. citizens without court approval.

4. Hey Al, remember what Greg Palast handed to you during the recount?
Yeah, that's right, Bush boy's head on a platter. The entire Vote Scam mess, disenfranchisement, names, dates, places, leading up through Katherine Harris up to Jebby and Georgie. And what did you do, given this prime opportunity not only to win the presidentcy, but also to banish all of the Bushies to the political wilderness forever? Yeah, that's right, you fucking sat on the story, condemned thousands of Florida voters to being disenfranchised, and handed this country over to the fascists.

Gore may be talking a good game now, but when the game is on the line, the man folds.

14. good god. every one in this country expects every leader to be
1. perfect
- maybe gore didn't "get" what was on the line. maybe he believed that the republic had enough safeguards to protect it. maybe he, like millions of other people, didn't realize who/what the bush crime family really was.
- maybe he didn't have good campaign managers. (i'm thinking all the handlers they've used are really moles for the RNC - and I note that he seems to have found some better counselors)
- maybe he, like a good many others in this nation, just couldn't believe that the mess was that bad. notwithstanding palast's info...who was palast pre-2000 anyway? (sorry, but i've only come to know his name in the past couple of years) and the info? how did Kerry react to that info, even though he was running a full 4 years later? how is Kerry still reacting? at least Gore now gets it.

2. clairvoyant or psychic
- maybe gore should have foreseen 9-11 and what that would bring to America?
- maybe gore should have known that the election was stolen and that the whole thing was a fix, but that would have required him to have foreknowledge of their plans and deeds, wouldn't it have?

so....me, i'll give anyone another chance (even republicans who show they've finally awakened from their kool-aid induced sleep), and especially so if what they did after folding was pick themselves up and get back in the game! in fact, because they have learned through their experience, and by getting up to face the people they let down, as well as their own disappointment, perhaps they come out so much the better for it.

17. Actually Gore did forsee a 911 and consequences - he ordered
the Hart/Rudman study to prepare for it - lots of airport measures that would have prevented the hijackings there.
Unfortunately, the report was ready during W's "reign" and he wiped his ass with it.

gave him too a list of states that will be stolen - right before election day - numbers, facts (Ohio, Fla were there). The guy has a fan club that posts on DU every trite speech he makes. Somehow, he is above reproach.
After the abject concession of 2004, to Gore now for this!!!! I am speechless!

19. Gore's campaign asked the FBI to investigate the vote fraud on 11/12/00
Palast's story was first printed on December 2, 2000, wasn't it?

Gore's request for an FBI inquiry came two weeks before Palast. It came five days after the election, two days after the statewide machine recount had finished, and two days before the first of Recount Dracula's bogus deadlines for ending the recount.

It's offline now, so I'll reprint this without a link:

From the London Times

MONDAY NOVEMBER 13 2000

Gore camp demands FBI inquiry

FROM DANIEL MCGRORY IN MIAMI

THE FBI is being asked to investigate how thousands of mainly black supporters of Al Gore were given ballot papers that had allegedly already been marked for rival candidates.

Yesterday Democrat officials were examining claims that up to 17,000 ballot papers in the Miami area had been tampered with in what they described as "organized corruption". Lawyers from across the United States descended on Miami and were busy taking statements from those complaining that they had been cheated or intimidated out of voting for Mr Gore.

A senior Democrat official in Miami, who has hired a team of 20 investigators to carry out an inquiry, told The Times: "Until now in Florida, we have been arguing foul-ups, human error and stupidity. But this is deliberate corruption to spoil votes for Gore and that must be a matter for the FBI.

The FBI didn't finish their investigation prior to Bush v Gore. (And the investigation was never finished, even though both FL Senators and a number of FL Congressfolk kept hassling the FBI and the Justice Department for the results.) However, Gore did refer to the many voting "irregularities" every time he spoke to the press or made speeches during the recount.

For example, this is from a press conference on December 6, 2000:

QUESTION: Do the votes in Seminole and Martin County count, the absentee ballots?

GORE: Well, there were more than enough votes to make the difference that were apparently thrown into -- the applications for ballots were thrown into the trash can by the supervisor of elections there, apparently, even though they were missing the same number that the Republican Party workers were allowed to come in and fix the other applications with.

So I don't want to speculate on what remedy might be. I'm not a party to that case or the Martin County case.

But more than enough votes were potentially taken away from Democrats, because they were not given the same access that Republicans were. Remember, according to what's come out in that case -- again, I'm not a party to it, but I've read about it.

Apparently the Democratic Party chair was denied the opportunity to even look at the list of applications, whereas the Republican Party workers were allowed to roam around unsupervised inside the office, and bring their computers in, and fix all of the valid applications for one side even as the Democrats were denied an opportunity to come in, denied a chance to even look at the applications and those applications were thrown out.

GORE: Now, that doesn't seem fair to me.

And apparently in Martin County, they were able to go in and take all the applications home with them.

It was the press that dropped the ball here, ignoring the information given them by Gore and others about voting irregularities (and legally, that's what they were at the time). The coverage of the media recount (i.e. all the "Bush still would have won" stories) was just more of the same.

23. The DLC around him folded. CBC were the only ones
who stood up and supported him. Not one dumb ass senator would stand with the Congressional Black Caucus to challenge and it was not Al's place to do it as President of the Senate though I really wish he had.

I was livid (and to a point, still am) over that travesty of justice. How one stinking Democratic Senator would not stand up and stop the coup that was taking place! :grr:

You really hit a nerve there with me, CanOfWhoopAss! ;) That wound had almost healed over, now you picked the scab off of it for me. Don't get me wrong, that's a GOOD thing. We should NEVER forget the events that allowed that piece of shit on a stick bush to steal the presidency.

If you're gonna lose your seat in the senate go down with your boots on. Sour grapes defense doesn't sit well with me. Repukes never let an election get away without a fight. Look how long it took them to "just get over" Washington's governorship... Actually they still haven't!!

29. Gore fought pretty hard
He took it all the way to the Supreme Court. How much further could he have gone? Perhaps you are right, maybe he should have insisted on an investigation, but at that point all the other spineless dems like HIS OWN FUCKING RUNNING MATE had backed down so he had no political cover. Plus, maybe he was concerned about the welfare of the country. I'll wager that his belief was that a continued fight would have severely damaged the nation, and at that time there is no way he could have known that a Bush presidency would actually be much more damaging.

20. I'll have to hold my nose tightly to vote for Nelson.
Other than the D's and R's next to their names, there's not much difference between them. He didn't join in the filibusters of judicial appointments, supports the war in Iraq, and is against national health care.
