Kids writing messages on bombs before they're dropped over Palestinian/Lebanese villages.

3. I saw American armed forces doing the same
on war ships before they destroyed Iraq. The kids are just learning from others. They all personify a nasty creeping evil called hatred of those not like them. Humankind has learnt nothing in centuries.

but I've no recollection of this being done by children. Which isn't to say that it doesn't happen.

29. There is no war against Iraq
there was an invasion and an occupation. The military guys were using markers to write on rockets and bombs on warships in the Persian Gulf.

I didn't know about the munitions factory bit - thanks for that. I agree it is disgusting to watch all the children being brainwashed with hate on all sides.

6. There are, ahem, some aspects of Israeli culture which may...
...be a little difficult, to put it charitably, for an American (especially a Liberal or Progressive) to understand or, further, agree with. Their nation and society are the victims of 20+ years of hardline conservative politics and governments. The religious right in their country, if researched, shows little difference from the Islamist clerics whom all Americans should fear. While there are many Liberals and Progressives in Israel there are an equal or, unfortunately, larger number of very conservative people who are blind to the actions of their government, who will give the nod (and in fact the salute) to what their government does in the name of stopping the very real terror that Israeli citizens face every day.

I'm sure that if American children were as close to the front lines as Israeli children are, it is likely that there would be scores upon scores of American parents bringing their children, as if to a picnic or a parade, to sign the artillery shells we use in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The fact that America pays billions to Israel to buy weaponry does not make these facts any less irritating to an American taxpayer, though.

11. This isn't Israeli culture. It's a consequence of what the wealthy
privileged war profiteers have created through their glorious wars.

This is what war is teaching kids. To hate others they don't know and to divide people so that wars can continue and the profiteers can continue on their money making sprees.

14. There are, indeed, some aspects of Israeli culture just like there...
...are some aspects of American culture, which find any military action patriotic and admirable on an almost religious level. Further complicating this matter is that there exist many ultra-conservative communities which exist as echo chambers unto themselves. I guess the closest you would get for an example in America are some small, hyper-conservative towns which pock the otherwise beautiful countryside. Still, it's very difficult to come up with an analogy, for instance, to an Ultra-orthodox Shas/Likud-voting kibbutz in American life. Or some of the concepts that the children are raised with and on.

8. Until now you have been a child. If you misbehaved.....
... you did not have to bear the responsibility

<snip>
A quotation from the Führer: "We want a hard generation that is strong, reliable, loyal obedient and decent, so that we do not need to be ashamed." (Spoken by a uniformed political soldier, for example an S.A. Man, an SS Man, or a political leader.)

Music:

(a song)

1. HJ Speaker :

Young people stand here
On the threshold of their lives.
A brief drum roll.

2. HJ Speaker:

We enter joyfully
Through the open door.
We face our fate courageously,
For while fate defeats the cowardly,
God helps the brave!
Drum roll.

3. HJ Speaker:

We the youth are the bridge
From ancestors to grandchildren.
A song

"Now let the banners fly..."

(First the tune is played. The words are available in the Schulungsbrief , February 1938, p. 45.)

23. Sad, disturbing, but understandable. Those bombs are saving the kid's lives
By going out to blow-up the rockets aimed at their own homes.

It's no more perverse than putting a yellow ribbon on your car to "Support the troops" or "Christening" a war ship.

Those children signing those bombs... their lives are in danger, too.

It's sad that ANY child-- on either side-- has to be in that situation.

Are you REALLY sure you want to go with that argument, when it's so clearly flawed and wrong?

Or are you suggesting that ALL Lebanese people desire the deaths of Israelis? Pretty racist viewpoint, so I hope not.

From year to year,

In your dear little ear
You've got to be carefully taught.

You've got to be taught to be afraid
Of people whose eyes are oddly made,
And people whose skin is a diff'rent shade,
You've got to be carefully taught.

You've got to be taught before it's too late,
Before you are six or seven or eight,
To hate all the people your relatives hate,
You've got to be carefully taught!

27. There is an organization of women called coalitionofwomen.org
It's a coalition of women from both Palestine and Israel working to bring more connection and peace between Israeli and Palestine women/citizens.

I think much if not most of the peace will have come from women. We are not creating these wars, it is apparent it is overtestosteroned men who are.

However, its time for women and men of compassion and human decency to come together in an international capacity to stop a minority of men from eroding all that is good and decent in our world.

Looking for centrist Jews in Kiryat Shmona is a little like looking for liberal atheists in Provo, Utah. The border towns don't attract people from the left or middle of the Israeli political spectrum.

I can just about guarantee that the majority of Israelis living in Tel Aviv would find this photo appalling.
