Targeting Terrorist Elements By Bombing Civilians |
|
Recently, a DUer sympathetic to the Israeli side of the argument wrote:
they are bombing elements that support Hezbollah... they are targeting terrorist elements, regardless of your effort to characterize it otherwise. Tragically, civilian casualties have resulted, however, unlike Hezbollah, they do not deliberately target civilians.
Meanwhile, in today's New York Post (check it out) you have a huge headline something about "ISRAELI BOMBS SMASH TERRORISTS"
...with a big picture showing an Israeli girl writing "a message for the terrorists" on an Israeli missile.
The very same article quotes how many terrorists and civilians "sympathetic to Hezbollah" have been targeted by Israli missiles.
How is this any different from what Hezbollah is doing? Especially when you consider that Israel's civilian-to-legitimate target ratio is NO BETTER than the Islamists?? Cui bono? Think, people!!
NY Post and pro-Israeli Evangelicals would have you believe that terrorist has NOTHING to do with attacking civilians. It has everything to do with identity -- ethnic and religious. They want to LEGITIMIZE attacking civilians.

Hezbollah rockets are yet to hit anything except civilians and open space. (N rockets/0 legitimate targets) if Israel hit just one, they would have an infinitely higher ratio (anything over 0 is undefined).
Math lesson aside, the IDF initial targets were transportation and communication infrastructure. Valid targets. They have leafleted prior to going after launch sites and storage areas as well. Considering the amount of ordinance expended, the civilian casualties are surprisingly light.

3. Casualties are never good |
|
but not to acknowledge that they are light given the circumstances would be incorrect. There are those who are claiming that the IAF is deliberately targeting civilians. If that were true there would be casualties many thousand casualties. Their hyperbole is not contributing to rationale discourse. Its not that I support what Israel is doing, but false claims are not going to make things any better. I have no problem calling the OP on his screed

if you know the enemy is hiding in a bunch of civlians and you bomb them then you are intentionally targeting civilians. Period. Nobody is blameless. The side with the upper hand has to be humane enough to stop it or alter their tactics. If israel wants to find these mobile rocket launchers then they should roll in with tanks and shoot them when they find them. They're not going to stop them by bombing whole suburbs. They're just creating the next generation of enemies.
