Sen: Lieberman freaking out about Lamont

Lamont is not a fringe candidate, and this isn't a hopeless battle. Uphill, yeah. Improbable, yup. But not hopeless. And given that he's promised to spend 7-figures of his own money, as well as possible support from DfA and MoveOn, and we've got ourselves quite an epic showdown brewing. Old world politics versus new. Insurance and corporate interests versus people-power. A Fox News Democrat versus a real one.

From the Q&A:

I believe that we as the Democratic party should and I as a senator would push back against some terrible policies, starting with the wrong headed invasion of Iraq and ill-advised tax cuts, and stand up forcefully for a Democratic agenda, which includes healthcare reform, education reform, and energy conservation. The Senator can speak for himself; I would oppose the nomination of Judge Alito since he jeopardizes a woman's right to choose, I would oppose education vouchers since they undermine our commitment to our public school system, I would have strongly opposed federal intervention in the Terri Shiavo case, I would have pushed for energy conservation and bio fuels as a better alternative than the liquefied natural gas plant in LI Sound; I would oppose diverting social security taxes into private accounts, and I would replace American troops on the front lines in Iraq with Iraqi troops as the first step towards bringing our troops home.

I plugged in to the gossip mill while in DC over the weekend, and this race has got everyone talking. The buzz is that Lieberman is freaking out, going so far as to demand that the Dem senate caucus help him eliminate this primary threat. However, those pleas don't appear to have been well received. He's on his own.

Take that with all the appropriate grains of salt and file away under "rumor" (even though the source is pretty darn good). But there's a reason that Lieberman has hinted he'd run as an independent in the general election if ousted in the primary. For him to even consider that possibility and vocalize it means it's on his mind. The grassroot groups in Connecticut are furious at Lieberman, and Lamont is the beneficiary.

As for Lamont, his campaign is currently staffing up. Hopefully we see good things from them soon.

I bet the DLC had a lot to do with Lieberman being selected as VP in 2000. I wish, I wish, I wish something had been different.

though most people didn't know who the hell Lieberman was, who the dlc was, or why it should even have mattered... but that's not the case anymore... Thanks to Lieberman's very public reichbot boot lickin', more and more people are starting to get it..

14. Joe Mentum is our test case, and sends a message to other dems...
...we want democrats who are democrats, not BushCo wannabees. A trouncing of Joe would send every democrat scurrying back to us, the party base, the REAL democrats. The DLC Dems really seem to believe that there was no election fraud, and that everybody voted for BushCo because WE were too far left. Brilliant strategy on BuchCo's part, incredible shortsightedness on the part of the DLC Dems.

Kick ass, Lamont. I'm a Connecticut Democrat, and I have a stack of worthless, self-serving form letters from Joe Mentum. It's time we had a representative who represents DEMOCRATS, not the BushCo status quo.

The part about the Senate Caucus not wanting to help him out. He's betrayed democratic principles so many times he deserves to be told to piss off and go it alone. He's not going to find solace from the republicans even though he's been one of their biggest ass-kissers either unless he decides to go ahead and make it official and put an R behind his name.

25. This is excellent news. "Fox News Democrat" indeed. Lieberman needs
to retire to the country and shovel horse poop all day - he's had so much practice at it, he must be a natural. His positions are so clearly designed to kiss up to the Bush Administration and allow them to call their criminal ploys "bipartisan," I do suspect they have something on him - all that NSA wiretapping, you know. It's really, really good for getting blackmailable info on people you want to control.

Edited on Wed Jan-18-06 06:10 PM by against all enemies
With at least 40% Democratic support, and huge numbers of Republicans and Independents voting for him (Quinnipiac poll), he would clearly win the Senate seat even as aN Independent. Not to mention, he has money beyond anyone else's wildest dreams and is the incumbent. I can't stand that prick, but he has no worries here in the land of steady habits.

I did register as a R...R...R...Republican for TWO DAYS so I could vote for McCain (and against Bush) in the 2000 primary, because I knew even then how evil bushyboy was. And that was before McCain punked out on us and rolled over like a puppydog...

Boy, did I feel dirty for those two days until I could get to town hall and change my registration back...

62. I'd rather see an actual Republican win than Joe Lieberman.
At least he/she would be being honest about their political position.

72. When Leiberman loses big to a progressive upstart .......
.....I sure do hope DLC and DEm party strategists are paying close enough attention to put to rest forever this idea that DEmocrats must be Republicans to win elections .

73. Excellent! But it's not over yet...

Lieberman will fight back. There must be no buckling under pressure or feeling guilty about "dividing" the party. And NO APOLOGISING FOR STATING WHAT YOU BELIEVE.
