The trouble with the Armageddon theme.... |

I am one of those who fear that the US is on the verge of entering into a regional war as Israel's ally -- and that this is but a single provocative event away.
There is no opposition to this war among Democrats -- both parties are on the same page -- although there is opposition in the nation from people who reject US military fighting in the Middle East.
It appears that the well-laid plans of the NeoCons are about to come to fruition -- the ultimate military showdown in the area, pitting the first and fourth greatest armies in the world against a raggle taggle collection of effective Arab resistance, who may not have the might of great armies, but excel at the strategy of killing a little at a time and bleeding their adversaries to death over the long term.
Not only does our government support this action, but it is being enthusiastically cheered from the sidelines by the wacko minority of Americans who have been seeking Another Big One for decades like our dear friends the freepers, but also by Christian fundamentalists, who view it as the fulfilment of Biblical prophesy that they have long awaited and highly anticipated.
I am among those who are warning that the notion that this all-out war will settle things once and for all and definite ensure security fot the US and Israel is a dangerous illusion. I fear that, after the inevitable early military victories, that "securing the peace" will result in the Mother of All Quagmires, and have ill results, even disastrous results, for both the US and Israel. (We're giving radical Islam the fight them want.)
But the funny thing is -- many of the supporters of this Chimperial Wars do not seem to be troubled by how badly they are going (Iraq and Afghanistan). They are, I predict, also not going to be picky about how things go in the Middle East. Why? Because Armageddon is not SUPPOSED to go well. A Chimperial disaster is just peachy, in their view, because these are The End Times. Bush doesn't have to worry about success. because no one is expecting -- or perhaps even desiring -- it.
