Although lacking wit, the remarks may well have been a stab at humor. Nevertheless, Virginia's top Democrat was left with a bitter taste following a recent political roast in that state during which several Republicans made racist and homosexual jokes.

Among the quips gone awry was an assessment by state Sen. Warren E. Barry, who is White, that a bridge linking Northern Virginia to the predominately Black District of Columbia was "Soul Brothers' Causeway."

Barry also referred to President Clinton's proposal to allow gays and lesbians in the military as "Fags in the foxhole."

Former Iran-Contra figure Oliver North joked that he couldn't get through on the telephone to the White House until he changed his voice pitch and pretended he was a gay caller. And former Bush adviser, Charles Black, joked Clinton wanted to change the Marine Corps hymn lyrics to include "don we now our gay apparel."

It never ceases to amaze me that anyone can say anything they wish about gays and no one does a damned thing. Both North and Black repeatedly appeared on TV after that without anyone challenging their bigotry.
