A late night thought: Every now and then, when DU goes down..
do you ever secretly think to yourself, just for a split second:

"THEY'VE finally taken over COMPLETELY!"

Do you find yourself buzzing over to Daily Koss, Pam's House Blend, and Raw Story just to make sure?

Or how about the WP or the NYT, because if they're online, we're fine!

Do you find yourself listening for the distant sound of sirens, hoping that the Reich Wing's Man made Armageddon isn't coming to pass?

Do you feel the urge to call a liberal family member or friend to make sure they're still alive?

Do you turn on the news, even Fox, just to make sure they aren't rattling a saber?

....and do you get that little rush of relief when it boots up just fine five minutes later and all your friends are there and all with the same post...

"Hey, anyone else having trouble with DU tonight?"

I actually found myself in that split second mode last night.

I guess I mean to say, as long as DU is here, we're OK.

:toast: :grouphug:

Am I insane?

1. Yep -- I always have that thought pop into my head.
Such a notion would have never entered my mind before The Illegitimate One took office. :scared:

2. I don't think you're insane.
But there are usually reasonable explanations for the problems.

3. oh yeah
back in the day, i had those thoughts and quickly went to other sites just as you describe. but now days the pendulum swings in such darkness that i expect the internet to be completely taken away at any moment. we are their worst enemy dissecting the propaganda the instant it is spewed. I'm wishing we had a plan b for that event.

8. Now THAT post is even scarier than the OP!
Thanks for giving me yet one more thing to have realistic nightmares about, Knowbody! ;) :hi:

Can you just imagine it? You boot up your PC, Windows opens normally, you enter your password and your system goes online automatically as usual ... except suddenly instead of getting your normal start page when you open a browser, you see this:

"ALERT: Due to national security concerns, as of 1:30 a.m. this date you can only access the Internet through a new site created by the United States Department of Homeland Security. Click the link below to be sent directly to the new site, from which you can proceed to the Internet -- after answering a few simple questions about who you are and why you wish to go online."

YIKES! Too realistic for my stomach to take without a little queasiness!

What a sorry state we've come to in this country.... all due to a coup d'etat successfully completed on January 6, 2001.

9. That is almost the definition of Net Neutrality
a fast lane for favored sites and a slow lane for the undesirables

When the slow lane gets too uppity, just slow it down even more.

11. Thanks, I'm trying, too. "Don't spread the dread" -- sounds like
an excellent mantra! Also a good comeback to wingnuts repeating the fear-inciting comments of the Bush Cabal....

6. No ...

Having a rather intimate familiarity without how fragile these networks and systems can be, I am somewhat more shocked and paranoid when I go several days without even a delay in loading a page ... like maybe "they" want to make sure this place stays alive so "they" know who to track.

But that passes because I know, in the grand scheme of things, we're barely a blip on their radar.

7. I didn't know DU ever went down!
Seriously, I've been here a year, and it hasn't happened when I've tried to access it, nor has it "acted strange" or anything like that.

I'm glad, because YES, I probably would have grown very concerned, very fast.

I have heard others here mention DU going down on occasion, so I know it must happen. I'll try to keep in mind, if it should happen to me, that it probably means only that there are some technical problems at DU, just as other sites occasionally have them.

I don't think you're insane, though. Not one bit. It's the world we live in, since the anointed one took over.

12. You're okay. The Bushistas steal elections and lie us into wars. Why
wouldn't they take over communications?
