How did Cynthia McKinney rate a parkway in Atlanta?
I was driving down Memorial Drive in Decatur, Ga., and saw the road marked by a sign as the "Cynthia McKinney Parkway".

WTF?

How do living politicians get parkways named in their honor?

http://www.house.gov/mckinney/news/pr61400c.htm I don't see it as any big deal really. What's the beef? And what law says they have to be dead?

5. Yup......
Bobby Byrd's got all kinds of things named after him here in WV: roads, schools, bridges, etc... And last I checked, he was still above ground.

I don't think this is something new. Remember the Hoover Dam?

4. pretty normal for GA
About half the roads around here are named for people who are very much alive. I think it's silly, but it's not unusual.

6. Ah! So, when a great representative like McKinney, who is every day
facing the seething hatred of Bushite bigots and operatives, and is no doubt being monitored by the Bushite NSA (looking for blackmail opportunities), stumbles just a bit--reacts to a Bushite-controlled security guard who tries to impede her entry to Congress--and all the Bushites pile on, as if this were the crime of the century, we, too--the supposed believers in democracy, the Leftist bloggers who represent the true majority--pile on, too, right on top of the fascist thugs, and start LOOKING FOR faults?

Look, Rex_Goodheart, I was a civil rights worker in Georgia and Alabama back when people like Cynthia McKinney were raped and lynched for walking on the wrong side of the street, and not casting their eyes downward to the white massa. I can't tell you how proud I am that Cynthia McKinney's name is honored with a parkway. Further, she is one of the FEW MEMBERS of the Diebold Congress who is truly trying to represent the majority of the American people. She is a truly great and courageous American. And I think the efforts I've seen here at DU to tear her to pieces are despicable. It's mob psychology. It's witch-hunting. It's Bushism. And I hope that sincere DUers will stop and think about how we are being played by the fascists--either directly by fascist operatives posting at DU, or by our own internalization of fascist views and "talking points." (i.e., Cynthia McKinney = bad. Ergo, a Cynthia McKinney Parkway = a bad thing.)

I just find it extremely tacky and politically favoritist to name public works after sitting politicians. I don't like it, whether Democrat or Republican.

13. Yeah, right, Rex_Goodheart! And you just happened to notice this one--
honoring Cynthia McKinney--and posted a prominent "WTF?" about it at DU--and somehow missed the THOUSANDS of other public works named after living officials around the country?

And you are just so very concerned about "tacky" parkway naming, that you had to highlight THIS one, here, today--while Bushite Israel slaughters yet more innocents in the Middle East, in what could be the beginning of WW III...?

Strange priorities you have, AT BEST!

"Meijer Lane," "Best Buy Drive," "Target Way," things like that. I wonder, do companies pay the municipality for naming rights, or are the local politicians simply that unimaginative?

named after both Democrats and Republicans here in Georgia?

What about the nightmarish Tom Moreland Interchange on I-285 named after Tom Moreland, former head of the GA DOT and now a private (Republican) engineering firm owner who does massive amounts of business with the GA DOT?

The Ronald Reagan Parkway in Gwinett Co. was there long before Reagan's demise.

How about the Sloppy Floyd building in downtown Atlanta? (He was some GA political bigwig.)

There's The Presidential Parkway to the Jimmmy Carter Library and, of course, Jimmy Carter Blvd. in Gwinnett Co.

Of course there is the Paul Broun Highway (the GA 10 Loop around Athens) named after the recently deceased, long time (more than 30 years)Democratic State Senator from Athens, GA.

Let's not forget the Larry McDonald portion of I-75 (I'll let you google that one but here's a hint: R-congressman, Korean jetliner, early 1980s)

Shall I go on? Georgia most powerful agency is the DOT (always has been) and there is a long history of naming roads, bridges and even intersections after famous GA politicians, of all parties.

edit: sp. and add Hartsfield-Jackson Airport named after two Atlanta mayors.
I see you're from NC so you must not be familiar with GA politics and the all-powerful GA DOT.

22. What about "George Bush Intercontinental Airport"?
In Houston, we mostly call it "The Big Airport." To distinguish it from Hobby Airport, named after a Democrat & more convenient to downtown.

The Metroplex has The President George Bush Turnpike. Pay those tolls!

Of course, these refer to Bush the Smarter.

29. common, although I think its a bad practice
Its pretty common for living, sitting politicians to get public streets, buildings or other facilities named after them. Personally, I don't have a problem with naming something after someone who is alive, but no longer an elected official. I think the practice of naming public facilities after sitting officials is wrong, but it didn't start with McKinney and it won't end with her either
