Here is an opinion few may agree with...
This entire operation against Hezbollah at this time was the idea of George W Bush and the neo-cons in this Administration. The Israeli government agreed to go along with it. The Israelis would never have done this at this time unless they had been goaded and persuaded by George W Bush and this Adminstration. Why? This is all part of Bush's larger vision on the war on terror. A Hugh Blunder has been made even Hugher!

1. You are right I don't
but I know a little about the area. To say that the American Government basically gave the Israelis the green light is just as idiotic as saying the Israelis and Jews in general control the American government.

Now if you said that this operation helps the neocons, you are right, but that is not the Israeli goal... now there is for your nuanced response

4. The Guardian seems to think so also...

<snip>
Bush 'gave green light' for limited attack, say Israeli and UK sources

<snip>
The US is giving Israel a window of a week to inflict maximum damage on Hizbullah before weighing in behind international calls for a ceasefire in Lebanon, according to British, European and Israeli sources.

The Bush administration, backed by Britain, has blocked efforts for an immediate halt to the fighting initiated at the UN security council, the G8 summit in St Petersburg and the European foreign ministers' meeting in Brussels.

"It's clear the Americans have given the Israelis the green light. They will be allowed to go on longer, perhaps for another week," a senior European official said yesterday. Diplomatic sources said there was a clear time limit, partly dictated by fears that a prolonged conflict could spin out of control.

Edited on Wed Jul-19-06 10:33 AM by nadinbrzezinski
what happens next is another story... that said, anybody who believes, that includes the Guardian by the way, that the US has that much of a leash on Israel
when it comes to military matters, does not know the area or Israelis.

18. so they have the power to
turn a war on or off at any time? One more week, and then halt the hostilities? On both sides? It's that easy?

If I knew stopping war was that easy, I would have told somebody a long time ago!

5. That's not an opinion - that's a theory
It should be testable; there should exist records and memories of conversations between Bush and his neocon buddies and the Israelis. Obviously getting them to open up on that theory would be difficult. But possible.

That said, I don't find it very convincing.

8. I think that, in essence, you are right, but probably not as
blatant as you make it. The targeting of Lebanese civilians and non-Hezbollah sites is clearly an overtly excessive response to the "kidnapping" of two Israeli soldiers by Hezbollah. This engagement would have almost none of the world condemnation had Israel's response been purely against Hezbollah targets. The Lebanese government might even have come out on the side of Israel had that been the case (it might not have, but there was at least a chance). This makes one suspicious of all the various motivations, here. It seems to play too neatly into the Dictator's hands. Maybe, like William Muny, he's "always been lucky in killin'"

11. The war on terror
is about keeping Bushco on power. Expect more terra alerts - MSM is already promoting the idea that Hezbollah will now attack the US in several states. Bush has got exactly what he wanted, timed it to perfection for the G8 summit and he and his goons are about to whip up the Christo-corporate fascist posse to win the November elections. Only American citizens can stop this murderous fuggery.

My advice? take a vacation. Go to the redwood country of northern California and clear your mind. It will do wonders.

"The Insane Brutality of the State of Israel"

Atrocities in the Promised Land

By KATHLEEN CHRISTISON
former CIA analyst

Words fail; ordinary terms are inadequate to describe the horrors Israel daily perpetrates, and has perpetrated for years, against the Palestinians. The tragedy of Gaza has been described a hundred times over, as have the tragedies of 1948, of Qibya, of Sabra and Shatila, of Jenin -- 60 years of atrocity perpetrated in the name of Judaism. But the horror generally falls on deaf ears in most of Israel, in the U.S. political arena, in the mainstream U.S. media. Those who are horrified -- and there are many -- cannot penetrate the shield of impassivity that protects the political and media elite in Israel, even more so in the U.S., and increasingly now in Canada and Europe, from seeing, from caring.

But it needs to be said now, loudly: those who devise and carry out Israeli policies have made Israel into a monster, and it has come time for all of us -- all Israelis, all Jews who allow Israel to speak for them, all Americans who do nothing to end U.S. support for Israel and its murderous policies -- to recognize that we stain ourselves morally by continuing to sit by while Israel carries out its atrocities against the Palestinians.
<.....>
A military establishment that drops a 500-pound bomb on a house in the middle of the night and kills a man and his wife and seven of their children, as happened in Gaza four days ago, is not the military of a moral country. <more>

21. Israeli agents, CIA operatives, U.S. para-military force, private armies..
....all of one mind, driven by a single insane goal, all feeding and getting fat and blotted at the war trough treasury that throws trillions of dollars every year into a war machine which targets tens of millions of innocent and helpless human beings who have ni more value then to be considered peripheral collateral or inferior animals to be the blood sacrifice on alter of power and domination. Yes, I do wonder at the vastness of it all, at how far this corruption has intruded into human affairs and it sickens me.

17. I don't think it's far-fetched at all
to figure that the US (including BushCo and nearly the entire Congress, the military, etc.) and Israel (at least the gov't and the military) are working together.

AIPAC brags about it:

http://www.aipac.org/military/

United Defense
"The United States and Israel have formed a unique partnership to meet the growing strategic threats in the Middle East, one of the world's most volatile regions. This cooperative effort provides significant benefits for both the United States and Israel. Over the years, many agreements relating to this partnership have been signed. The U.S.-Israel strategic partnership includes joint intelligence ventures and joint military ventures."

http://www.aipac.org/military/unitedDefense.cfm

----

It might be the idea of Bush and the neocons - but plenty of Democrats are going along with it.
