House Moves to Protect ('Under God' in) Pledge From Courts
House Moves to Protect Pledge From Courts

WASHINGTON -- The House of Representatives Wednesday took up legislation to shield the "under God" phrase in the Pledge of Allegiance from federal court rulings that would remove it.

The pledge protection act, expected to pass over mainly Democratic opposition, is part of the House GOP's "American values agenda" that House Speaker Dennis Hastert said would "defend America's founding principles." Another part of that agenda, a constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage, was defeated in the House on Tuesday.

The pledge bill, sponsored by Rep. Todd Akin, R-Mo., would deny jurisdiction to federal courts, and appellate jurisdiction to the Supreme Court, to decide questions pertaining to the interpretation or constitutionality of the Pledge. State court could still decide whether the pledge is valid within the state.

The legislation grew out of a 2002 ruling by the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals that the pledge is unconstitutional when recited in public schools.

7. Hey, they have to keep the fundies ginned up and frothing at the
mouth. It's still a long way to the election and the fundies attention span is so short that we will be seeing a lot of these until November. After that it will all drop off and we'll simply go back to the main issue of world conquest.

8. Thank goodness they know their priorities
You know, as I was walking to work early this morning, and I saw some people lying in the doorways of buildings downtown here, realizing the horrible problem of homelessness in such a wealthy country as the United States of America, it's SO heartening that our "leaders" in Washington is trying to take care of the REAL problems facing us today.
