Where are the liberal representatives?
Edited on Wed Jul-19-06 11:44 AM by jsamuel
War breaks out and they are no where to be seen. 80% of us (poll taken at DKos) think that invading Lebanon will only increase terrorism in the region.

SO WHERE ARE THE DEMS?

It seems to me, the bigger the voice, the quiter they are right now.

This feels just like pre-Iraq.

The RW has control of the media and NO LIBERALS ARE SPEAKING OUT!!! WHERE ARE YOU?! WHAT IS MORE IMPORTANT?

1. You're right. Every liberal in the country is actually FOR war.

I know I am.

3. i changed it slightly
If your not speaking up right now, then you don't have a voice and are not contributing to the country.

10. I think the shift in public support from very high to ungovernably low
for Dubya signals a rejection of his foreign policy.

Or what passes for foreign policy in this administration.

I think his presidency is a trainwreck and that historians, if they remember him at all, will assess him as a comprehensive failure.

When John Murtha publicly denounces a "war president's" policy regarding the military, it's pretty much over with.

9. Maybe they can't afford to attract notice?
Why, the NSATTSBC Gestapo knows all about their calls to their dealers and their on-the-side "companions" and all the other trifling little dirt that everyone has but nobody in politics can afford to have revealed.

My two cents. Notice my lack of tinfoil hat icon. Everyone knows that tinfoil only AMPLIFIES the mind control signals sent by, oh, whoever. The Borg, I guess, at this point. ; )

I can't say I'm an avid C-Span watcher...
but I try to follow what goes on in the house & senate, and haven't really heard of anybody standing up for peace other than Dennis Kucinich. I have heard plenty of pledges of unconditional support of Israel from otherwise liberal reps (Feingold springs to mind).

Please correct me if I'm wrong. Some of the Span-geeks reading this may know of more discussion that didn't get covered.

5. Gee, Iran's leader shouting "Blow ___ off the face of the map" is okay?
Edited on Wed Jul-19-06 11:50 AM by HypnoToad
(that's not a comment personally addressed to you; I just find it odd that precious few want to address that "the other side" isn't as innocent as Israel. It's equal.)

Their actions are just as relevant in this entire mess. And, by doing what Israel did not, sadly gives Israel some credibility. Israel isn't out to blow up Iran or other countries.

Both sides have often fought, and to my knowledge Israel came about because of a land dispute, of which they are protecting their own. Please prove me where I'm wrong.

Both sides are immature, and Israel sure as hell went too far in reacting to the taking of Israeli hostages, but let's face it - there is a distinction in the here and now that cannot be forgotten. Iran shouted it from the proverbial mountaintop. What should everyone do; wait for Iran to accomplish it?

If Iran apologized about that asinine remark, maybe - just maybe - there'd be a shred of hope in this nightmare. And, yeah, they were provoking Bush. But maybe they should have thought before opening their yap.

What is important is perspective: Both sides are ran by immature toddlers. And there has to be common sense in all this. THAT must surely be a liberal point of view because both sides want the other exterminated. It's been this way for a very long time.

Invading Lebanon will probably make things worse. But Iran's leader acting like the dumbfuck from hell ISN'T going to make things worse? (Okay, this is becoming Iran-centric, but it cannot be denied they are a key player in this and Israel is acting in a knee-jerk paranoid fashion. In this day and age, who the fuck wouldn't? Worse, if it's true there are pockets of Hizbollah waiting to hear the word before blowing themselves up with as many of Americans as they can in the process, damn straight something needs to be done. Enough lives have been lost already to this childishness.)

will provide link on edit.

Even if it was said, saber-rattling is par for the course in the ME. You respond to words with words.

11. It Would Seem You Approve Of Pre-emptive Warfare, Toad
And i quote "What should everyone do; wait for Iran to accomplish it?" My answer is yes. When a sovereign nation is attacked by another, they retaliate. Pre-emption is not my idea of fair play.

Edited on Wed Jul-19-06 12:49 PM by jsamuel
:sarcasm:

No, what I said was that "invading Lebanon will only increase terrorism in the region."

Please don't straw man me.

I don't disagree with most of what you said, but it is time for Democrats to put their foot down on what foreign policy makes sense. I simply request the above statement.

6. I thought I saw a response from Feingold, and Hillary
I know you probably don't consider Hillary as a liberal, but there are some voices out there if you listen. To be honest, there hasn't been much talk on either side. It is a complex issue, and as in the case of Feingold's statement, many liberals won't like what they hear.

14. I didn't want it to turn into a comment on Hillary's politics thread...
... I am just saying that there is some stuff out there, and regardless of a person's political leanings on other issues, they may not be a good indicator of what someone feels about this issue.

20. yes he is, but I am not arguing over liberal credentials
I am simply saying that if 80% of the liberal blogsphere feels this way, then at least "a few" of our representatives should be speaking up. Even liberals in the media. Or even high profile bloggers. None of that is happening. People are afraid to speak up...?

12. Israel is not going to take direction from Washington anyway.
Israel is under attack. They are being bombed daily. I don't understand what you expect from U.S. liberal representatives, they are not relevant to this situation.

I don't understand the "pre-Iraq" reference either. It's not OUR war (yet).

18. haha
pre-Iraq wasn't OUR war (yet) either

and it feels like pre-Iraq because no alternative voices to the RW ones were being heard/speaking up

I expect them to say "invading Lebanon will only increase terrorism in the region" as is evidenced by Iraq and Afghanistan and the history of the ME.

23. For Israel, it is about self-preservation
Edited on Wed Jul-19-06 01:24 PM by El Fuego
For us, the fact that terrorism breeding grounds are being created by military action is an abstraction, and just a potential threat.

But if you are an Israeli, and Hezbollah is actively trying to bomb you out of existence, the possibility of spawing future terrorists who may one day attack the US is a lesser concern.

I don't think the right of a country to defend itself is a RW position.
