US digs in heels AGAINST Mideast cease-fire calls

UNITED NATIONS, July 19 (Reuters) - The United States dug in its heels on Wednesday against U.N. calls for a cease-fire between Israel and Lebanon, saying such a measure made little sense between a state and a "terrorist group" like Hizbollah.

Speaking hours after France proposed that the U.N. Security Council consider a resolution calling for a lasting cease-fire, U.S. Ambassador John Bolton said the council should focus on disarming the Hizbollah militia and extending Lebanese government control over the entire country.

Lebanese Prime Minister Fouad Siniora renewed his appeal for an immediate cease-fire on Wednesday, saying more than 300 people had been killed and more than half a million displaced in his country since Israeli began a fierce offensive last week after Hizbollah militants captured the two Israeli soldiers and fired rockets into Israel.

U.N. spokesman Farhan Haq reiterated in New York that Secretary-General Kofi Annan had consistently said there was "an urgent need" for an immediate cessation of hostilities.

6. They make a lot of money doing large rebuilding projects
Infrastructure, etc. They were counting on making tens of billions in Iraq rebuilding what ShockNAwe blew up, although I don't think that's going swimmingly these days

For some reason, though, I don't think they will be welcome to rebuild in Lebanon.

4. Of course they are.
They are hoping with all their might that it escalates and gives them a reason to go after Iran and/or Syria. Mid-term elections are coming up and this is just what they need. Another "security" issue that apparently (for some unfathomable reason) people still see as a GOP strong point.

7. Well of course we're digging our heels in
After all, Bushco and the PNAC group are counting on this to provide thei spark for their full blown invasion of Syria and Iran. Can't get that war on if somebody calls a ceasefire:banghead:

10. It's even worse - ***READ THE SENATE RESOLUTION on these attacks:***
It already passed, by a voice vote so there is no accountability. It calls for the President to impose sanctions on Iran and Syria (gues this power is one more unitary executive one) and lays the groundwork for much more. It also gives absolutely open season for Israel to do whatever the hell it wants in the Middle East. No accountability, no limits, no end.

A similar horror is about to pass in the House. Read about it and DO something. See these tho threads:

14. Typical neo-con "logic"...
U.S. Ambassador John Bolton said the council should focus on disarming the Hizbollah militia and extending Lebanese government control over the entire country.

...and, of course, the best way to "extend Lebanese government control" is to continue destroying Lebanon's infrastructure, thus making it nearly impossible for the government to keep control even over the areas it already has. Not to mention, of course, the trivia issue of killing, wounding, and destroying the livelihood of hundreds of Lebanese civilians with no ties whatsoever to Hezbollah.

:banghead:
