Stem cell research and short sightedness.
The veto, today, saddens me very much. It saddens me how short sighted our government is. It saddens me how the fundies can not see past their own beliefs since others in this country do have a wide range of their own beliefs.

Our government is supposedly representative of their people. Polls have been done where over 70% of our citizens believe in cell stem research. The representatives put it through but chimpster just thinks he knows better than anyone else. He is representing maybe 30% of our citizens. I guess that is the same 30% for whom he can do no wrong.

What these people have to realize is that if these embryos do not have research done on them then they end up being thrown away. I understand some families have 'adopted' and used a few of the embryos but that is a very small percentage. I could understand outrage if there were more takers than there were embryos but I have yet to read an article where a family was denied an embryo that they went on to use for stem cell research. These embryos end up in the trash. Period. These embryos could be doing a lot of good in the scientific community and for people's health. This good could save a real child's life some day. It could provide for them a better quality of life and they all are pro-life which means they should be for that.

What these snow baby folks do not realize (or care about) is that this has long range effects that they, and I, can not possibly comprehend. Research has already shown that quite a few scientists have moved to countries that are friendlier toward research. This include research on anything, not just stem cells. When we loose scientists we do not just loose the research you are against. These scientists could come up with great discoveries. The reason why we live longer lives is due to scientific discoveries. The reason why so many more children live, when born, is due to science. Science creates things to make life better - like light or air conditioning. And, yes, we can copy other people's technology when THEY invent it but I have always been so proud of how creative and smart our society was.

Lest you ignore the above discoveries and how much easier they have made life, let me remind you of one thing you may not have thought of. Science can go both ways and invent things such as weapons. When we push intelligent people into other countries then they may be the ones inventing a weapon that could cause our destruction. Feel any safer now?

The most important reason this bill should have passed is all the people who suffer in our country. There are people who are sick. They can hardly move and are not sure how long they will make it living day to day. It is truly selfish to say that these embryos must thrown away. WE once advertised for other countries to give us their cold, their tired, their poor. That means we would look after the least of our brothers. We would extend our hands and make life as best as it could be for each other. That one invitation said that we are all one and in this together.

* took this bill and vetoed it. He turned his back on the sick. These embryos could be used for stem cell research to possibly help these people. Do you know what they are called if they are not research? They are called trash. We have told the weakest in our community that we would rather trash their chance to lead a normal life than to possibly give them hope for the future.

The government should not turn their back on the weakest of their citizens. These are the people who we should truly reach out to and bring aid and comfort. I am ashamed.

1. The Bushists are not interested in science, or health, or solutions
They're all about appeasing the base. There's no other reason for them to take this extraordinary measure to make sure the federal govt. plays no role in encouraging stem cell research.

2. They will start caring .....
if another country comes up with a weapon that can destroy us. They will not put two and two together but they will at least care at that point.

I can tell you from first hand experience that his speech today was a crock of lies. It's time to trade my hope for a sixteen gauge and some dry shells.

4. DanCa....
You are one of many reasons that I am so mad right now. I can not even start to imagine what you go through and you are a hero to me. I know it may sound hollow but if there is anything I can ever do, please let me know. I am very sorry about this but we must hope someone will step up to the plate and correct all of these wrongs. I will keep you in my thoughts.
