OMG Reagan replacing FDR on the dime?!
Edited on Wed Jul-19-06 03:42 PM by icymist
I found this advertisement on the History International chanel:

"Americans from all over the country are besieging their Congressmen and Senators with demands to dump the Roosevelt dime and replace him with the image of President Reagan."

And sure enough, I found their web site advocating this abomination in politics! Maybe enough of us writing our Congressmen and Senators in outrage over this will change minds. FDR saved this country while Reagan set the stage for Dumbya to ruin it!

P.S. notice how this ad demotes FDR to just his last name while applauding Reagan as POTUS!

2. Hey, I heard on Air America they're trying to get rid of the
penny and nickel (I don't have details). Maybe they'll get rid of the dime, too. It's not worth anything anymore, is it? I think they're making it out of cardboard now.

8. I haven't heard about dumping the nickel, but the penny is long overdue
it takes more than three cents to manufacture a penny, and some countries have dumped their pennies with no ill affects (Australia and New Zealand).

14. If it's dumped, the nickel becomes the new penny. If the nickel is
dumped, the dime becomes the new penny, and so on. How long would it take for all change to vanish which would turn the dollar into the new penny? Is this something we really want to do?

When I was in Italy in the early 70's
the smallest coin made was 10 lira. It was made out of aluminum and all it was good for was to put in the slot on the coin box in the elevator to ride up in apartment buildings. The stores all listed as prices something ending in a odd number of lira like 97 and what you got in change was a couple pieces of candy.

I love them because people discard them and leave them on the ground. I always pick them up and put them in my penny jar. What others believe to be worthless I turn into $$. :)

6. While I do find this disturbing,
I think this is more of a case of somebody parting freepers from their money. This isn't a real dime they're hawking, it is a proof dime, basically a dime sized piece of metal stamped with Ronnie's mug, and sold for big bucks to freepers and ditto heads.

Don't get me wrong, there is an organized movement afoot to put Reagan's face on everything, including some form of money. But I think this is fairly harmless, just seperating the rubes from their cash.

The March of Dimes became the March of Dimes because FDR was crippled and so they used the dime as their rallying cry. Who said all republicans are not dumb, but all dumb people are republicans?

maybe a tastefully constructed representation of his ass mooning the American people on one side, and the words "in debt we trust" on the other with a rendering of Ronny carrying bags of money from the treasury. Hell, let's put a few social security receiving retirees chasing after him on the coin. I'm beginning to think the dime may have to become larger than its current size.

19. The website is bunk, the idea is real...
Edited on Wed Jul-19-06 03:57 PM by SlipperySlope
The website you link to is just another place trying to separate fools from their money. You can stamp whatever you like on a piece of metal, so long as you aren't making copies of real coins. This is just another worthless commemorative from a worthless mint.

However, the idea is real and does keep coming up. It hasn't really gotten much traction in Congress yet, and it isn't likely to.

One more factoid: if all goes according to plan there will indeed be a US coin minted in 2016 or so with Reagan on it. Starting in 2007 the US Mint is going to start a Presidential Dollar Coin series (similar to the current State Quarter series). Sacagawea will be off the dollar coin and four presidents a year will be commemorated. Reagan comes up in 2016 or so.

Edited on Wed Jul-19-06 04:07 PM by IthinkThereforeIAM
... name or likeness on any object of stationary or enduring status is the final insult to injury. It is the GOP's way of saying "in your face with disgrace" for putting a man described by Stansfield Turner, as "stupid" into the White House.

"The more he was exposed to Reagan, the more Turner had come to doubt the man's basic thoughtfulness. He had described him privately as, "stupid." "
-- Bob Woodard, page 24 Veil (hardcover)

I was physically ill when they renamed National Airport (which i flew in and out of when in college) to that which I cannot repeat. It is "RR" something.

31. It's just some boiler-room jackass trying to make a quick buck.
I've seen this commercial a whole bunch of times on G4TV while watching Star Trek. All they want to do is sell a bunch of freepers a fake coin that has maybe two bucks' worth of silver for $10.

As a matter of fact, they have a whole line of Reagan crapola that looks like US coinage. The 6-piece proof set sells for $99. As a matter of perspective, a silver proof set from the US Mint that includes all five 50-state quarters for that year costs $35.

I have one word for anyone who falls for this shit. STUPID.

44. Get rid of the penny and put Reagan on the nickel...
...the plugged nickel,* that is.

*Plugged Nickel
This is US slang dating to 1888. Back when coins actually contained valuable metal, it was a counterfeiting practice to remove the silver or other valuable metal from the center of the coin and replace it with a plug of lead or other base metal. Hence, plugged nickel.

This whole thing with the state quarters and changing the bills is just crap. Our currency, which used to look so nice and the change felt so nice and heavy in your hand, now looks and feels like cheap crap from the dollar store.

WE CAN'T AFFORD THIS! BUY A CLUE!!!
