Energy Secretary in Baghdad: ‘Far More Stable’ Than In 2003, ‘People Are More Relaxed’

Energy Secretary Samuel Bodman was in Baghdad yesterday to meet with Iraq’s oil and electricity ministers. The New York Times reports, Bodman “had a rosy view of progress here since his last visit in 2003″:

“The situation seems far more stable than when I was here two or three years ago,” he said in an interview in the fortified Green Zone. “The security seems better, people are more relaxed. There is an optimism, at least among the people I talked to.”

Iraq is not more stable. The same day of Bodman’s visit, a U.N. report showed that 3,149 civilians had died violently in Iraq last month. Baghdad’s central morgue alone received 1,595 bodies in June.

As for Bodman’s sense that Iraqis seem optimistic and “more relaxed,” recall what one private contractor wrote in an intelligence brief to the U.S. military earlier this month:

Baghdad looks so exhausted these days and so do her people; the relentless violence, the lack of basic services and the scorching heat abolishes human desire to do anything or to even think of anything.

Sure sounds relaxing.

2. Oh, yeah, you'd be REAL RELAXED too, if you lived in a city with only
six or seven bombs going off per day.

Wouldn't you?

Is there anyone in this administration who isn't dumber than a fucking doorknob?

9. You're right. I just apologized to the ones in my house. At least they
know enough to open the door latch when you turn them, which is a hell of a lot more than 90% of the people in the bush administration know.

(Especially if they work for DHS or FEMA.)

Thanks for the correction.

4. Never mind, sorry we brought it up. Over. Done. Finis. All's well.
They really do think we're the dumbest population on earth.

I'm constantly insulted by these Chamber of Commerce moments this asinine administration comes up with and their balls to try and sell it over and over.

5. Do you think these two were on the same trip?
Fresh from a trip from Iraq, Rep. Gil Gutknecht (R-Minn.) told reporters on Tuesday that the situation is more bleak than he thought and that American forces appear to have no operational control over much of Baghdad.

Gutknecht, who has been a strong supporter of the war but now faces a re-election challenge from a Democratic National Guard veteran who has been critical of the Bush Administration's conduct of the war, said a partial withdrawal of American troops might be wise.

"The condition there is worse than I expected," Gutknecht was quoted as saying in the Mankato (Minn.) Free Press. "...I have to be perfectly candid: Baghdad is a serious problem."

<snip> “That’s a far cry from what we were told originally,” he said. “... All of the information we receive sometimes from the Pentagon and the State Department isn’t always true.”

12. Stupid freepers lap this stuff up.
Remember the incredibly stupid and bogus claims that it's just like any big city in the US?

Freepers apparently believe anything that supports their stupid world view.

It's the brownshirt mentality. They think God sent Bush to be our Great Leader.

They will believe anything.

Expect a new round of right-wing emails telling us how great it is in Iraq, now that it's not getting the news coverage due to Israel / Lebanon.
