Christian Group Says Smacking Kids for 15 Mins Is Good & Drives Away Sin
Row over Christian smacking manual
19 July 2006
By ANNA CHALMERS and MATTHEW TORBIT

A Christian group urging parents to smack their children, using discipline sessions lasting up to 15 minutes, has been accused of promoting what amounts to child abuse.

Family Integrity has produced a controversial eight-page booklet on how to use physical punishment under the present law.

Parents are told that smacking can be a "10-to-15-minute process" and that if a child reacts angrily, such as by slamming doors or "pouting", they should be smacked again.

"Smacking is meant to drive the foolishness, the sinful manifestations, out of the child's personality so that they do not become permanent fixtures," it says.

1. well, it doesn't drive away the SMACKING sin...
I can't believe this item:
"if the child is angry after the smack, you have not smacked hard enough"

I just gotta say, that is sadistic, abusive behaviour, and to actually include it in a manual is beyond conscience.

man, evangelicals are just whack.

After they're arrested for child abuse I'm sure there will be plenty of cross-examination before the Guilty verdict.

11. Ask ANY shepherd: If you beat a sheep - it DIES.
Or, it goes insane. Which explains why so many humans are so fucked up - because we think a "good shepherd" beats his sheep. DUMB.

13. 10 or 15 MINUTES?!?!?!? - that IS child abuse.
I was spanked for perhaps 5-10 seconds when I was a kid - admittedly with a belt or a switch. Got my attention.

With my kids, I think we swatted them with a bare hand to the butt ONCE only a few times. Denial of privilege (no computer, no TV, no friends visiting, no playing) worked much better.

I remember sending my daughter's sleepover friends home at 10 pm (their parents were not amused) when she
decided to not do her chores and make a point of showing off to her friends that she could say no.

Send their friends home, make it stick, and it will work wonders. Also, taking back their allowance, in front of their friends works too.

Didn't have to do either more than once.

Swatting :== child abuse.

22. 10 to 15 Minutes IS Child Abuse
I am one of those people who believes in corporal punishment, but only for severe incidents and only when it is used dispassionately and with precision. Very few people can communicate well enough to use corporate punishment with such precision. What these lunatics are proposing is nothing of the sort.

I remember reading about a horrific incident in the Austin, Texas local newspaper of a couple of fundie "counselors" who beat a kid to drive the devil out of him. They used a heavy wooden club and did severe damage to the child's nerves and kidneys. They got 20 years and I think they deserved their sentence.

This religious-based nonsense about child-rearing deserves lawsuits.

They made it to heaven because they hadn't sinned.

15. I got smacked as a kid...
and it didn't drive the sin out of me! Actually, this makes me think of a guy I used to know. His fundy parents caught him doing "you show me yours I'll show you mine" with a male friend when he was really young, and beat him and made put his hand on a bible and swear it didn't happen. He grew up to be a gay male escort with a penchant for BSDM. Wiped the sin right out of him, yes it did! :)

24. Breaking the will of the child to gain full control over the child crowd
course, the "will" is called sin by these folks

Free will?...unless they deem your will sinful and foolish that is...

Takes a true bully (coward) to buy into such thinking
