Backlash emerges against Latino culture
Yes, we are a more United States of America, aren't we? :(

====

NORCROSS, GA. - In some ways, the traveling taco stand has become a symbol of the rise of Hispanics in the US. Here in Gwinnett County, Ga., it wasn't any different – until lawmakers outlawed the $1 street-corner taco vendor last month.

Hispanic purveyors of the workingman's lunch represent an immigration policy many Americans feel has gone haywire. In many interior states where the Hispanic immigration had been minimal until recently, residents are encountering more new faces speaking an incomprehensible language and infiltrating street corners with their cilantro-spiced fare.

In resisting the sudden and growing influence of Latino culture, some cities and towns across America are requiring the use of English and restricting culinary mores and even the Hispanic tradition of sitting on the front porch...

Others have taken even more flagrant actions toward Hispanic immigrants. A Philadelphia sub shop owner, Joseph Vento, has a sign up that reads: "This is America. When Ordering, Speak English." In Ohio, Butler County Sheriff Richard Jones has put up a yellow sign saying "Illegal Aliens Here," with an arrow pointing to the county jail.

2. One thing I will say in defense of Texas
Is that you don't see that kind of shit here. At least very rarely, anyway. Hispanic culture is pretty well embraced here.

17. I agree, and same for New Mexico
my home state. There are of course too many "good old boys" in particularly red areas, but all in all, most of Texas and most of New Mexico are very diverse and integrated to a good degree.

Oh, how I miss the Land of Enchantment.

21. Yes, indeed
San Antonio raised and living in New Mexico.

A lunch taco or two and aguasfrescas for lunch was the norm for me for quite a while. I'm more at home with that than with anything else. That's part of MY America...

When I was 16 I went to Jamaica for a week's vacation and the closer to the end of the vacation I got, the only thing I could think about was when I could come home to some fajitas.

3. calling Gino's a "sub shop" is an insult to Cheesesteaks
everywhere, Vento's foolishness notwithstanding.

As good as Gino's is, Pat's Steaks is better.

6. Most Americans realize the illegals only want a better life
for their families. That's it, no sub plots or anything else. Christ did no put up a fence that said you cannot enter.

We need to do away with borders. Global economy equals global workers.

7. Sitting on the front porch(?)
is a Latino tradition? Where did they get this 'fact'?

"Nobody thought much about the front porch when most Americans had them and used them. The great American front porch was just there, open and sociable, an unassigned part of the house that belonged to everyone and no one, a place for family and friends to pass the time.

Davida Rocklin "

10. It's odd, but every latino on my block DOES hang out on the front porch
Edited on Thu Jul-20-06 02:11 AM by SoCalDem
I get irritated at my next door neighbors because they BARBEQUE on the front porch..and have their poor old grandpa sit out there in his easy chair all day..no matter hot hot it gets..

and they SCREAM (not angrily) at the top of their lungs.. I cannot leave my doors & windows open when the weather's nice because of the noise and the barbeque smoke that wafts in and chokes me....

They have a very nice back yard, but no one uses it..

8. .....infiltrating street corners with their cilantro-spiced fare!!!!!!!!!!
Oh, the HUMANITY!!!!!!!

That entire article is one of those things that fifteen, twenty years from now, people (to include those who don't get it now) will look at it and CRINGE at the references--even the people who are angrily quoted in it now will feel the shame....because we KNOW they aren't talking about, say, the Irish illegal aliens, or the Chinese ones, either...are they:

"I don't think you'd see this generalized fear if they were selling grits," says William Frey, a demographer at the Brookings Institution in Washington.

In Ohio, Butler County Sheriff Richard Jones has put up a yellow sign saying "Illegal Aliens Here," with an arrow pointing to the county jail.
~~~~~~~~~
" ... o illegal immigrants and those who would hire or abet them in any way ... You are no longer welcome," Mayor Lou Baretta wrote in a letter posted on the city's website.
The hate-group business is booming since the past five years, so what does it lead to? To a further debasement of American culture? How much lower does low have to go?
This must be nipped in the bud.
Gee, the next thing you know, the Italians will be wanting to sell slices of pizza, and the Germans will be wanting to sell bratwursts.
