Ain't it a funny thang... Lebanon had INVITED Syrian troops into Lebanon
for protection.

Protection against what?

Against an invasion. Again.

Invasion by whom?

Israel. Again.

bush demanded Syrian troops leave Lebanon.

They do so.

Who's now committing the war crime of bombing the crap out of civilian infrastructure in Lebanon and threatening a full-scale invasion - again?

Hmmm.

2. Not true.
Syria went into Lebanon to counter the Palestinian militias, not the Israelis.

3. 1976; Syrian army invited in to assist against the Palestinians.
March, 1978, Syrian troops invited to remain to assist against Israel's invasion of Lebanon.

7. Did they leave in 1977?
Doesn't seem like it.

9. They were invited to remain.
In fact, when they were recently forced out, the majority of Lebanese did not want them to leave.

Sorta like US troops in Japan & South Korea, where the majority of citizens have wanted US troops the hell out for years and yet gee, we're still there.

11. Link?
That's not what the encyclopedia says, or the vast amount of news coverage. Remember the "Cedar Revolution" last year? Lebanese were protesting in the streets because they wanted Syria out of their country - and when Syria withdrew, Lebanon finally had an independent democracy. It does seem sorta like the US troops stationed in the Mideast - most people wanted Syria out, and yet they're still there, years after the civil war was over.

15. I'd like to have citations for several pieces of information:
1) In both of the cases you cited, who invited the Syrian military into Lebanon?

2) A citation for your assertion that Syria was in Lebanon in 77/78 to counter a threat from Israel.

4. So what about all the Lebanese who wanted
Syria out of their country, who marched in the 'Cedar Revolution'?

14. Shia aren't the majority
"Still, there is no single sect constituting a majority of the population by itself. The Shi'a is the largest community, thought in 1990 to be about 35% of the population."

Why don't you at least read an article about Lebanon before posting an OP like this?

5. No. Against Palestinians.
Syrian intervention -
In June, 1976 Syria sent 40,000 troops into Lebanon to prevent the Maronite militias from being overrun by Palestinian forces. Together the Syrians and Maronites pushed the Palestinians out of Beirut and into southern Lebanon. Over the next few years, shifting political climates resulted in Syria being allied with the Palestinians and some of the Maronites allied with Israel. Syrian forces remained in Lebanon, effectively dominating its government until 2005.

8. That Because Syria Believes Lebanon And Israel Are Part Of Greater Syria
That's why Saddam believed Kuwait was the 23rd Province.

There's enough irredentism to go around on all sides.
