If I had seen this while carrying my gun ...
Edited on Thu Jul-20-06 10:01 AM by RagingInMiami
ST. PETERSBURG -- An 8-year-old girl was raped on the side of a residential street in full daylight less than half a block from her apartment, police said.

Someone who witnessed the crime Wednesday afternoon chased away the perpetrator, who remained on the loose Thursday, police spokesman Bill Proffit said. The girl was treated at a hospital and released.

The girl was leaving a park at about 12:55 p.m. with her 7-year-old brother when a man grabbed her from behind, pulled her to the ground and raped her, police said. Their mother had left them alone for a few minutes to return home and turn off the kitchen stove.

A man playing basketball nearby said he heard the screams and ran to the scene. A motorist who witnessed it began honking her horn and dialed 911. The perpetrator got up and ran away.

Edited on Thu Jul-20-06 10:10 AM by KyndCulture
1 in 6 American women were the victim of an attempted sex act or completed sex act against their will by the time they are 18. (according to the USDOJ)

That's not something to be very proud of.

11. You are right, I just looked it up too:
Key Facts:

Every two and a half minutes, somewhere in America, someone is sexually assaulted.
One in six American women has been the victim of an attempted or completed rape, and 10% of sexual assault victims are men.
In 2003-2004, there were an average annual 204,370 victims of rape, attempted rape or sexual assault.
About 44% of rape victims are under age 18, and 80% are under age 30.
Since 1993, rape/sexual assault has fallen by over 64%.

2004 Statistics:

In 2004, there were 209,880 victims of rape, attempted rape or sexual assaults according to the 2004 National Crime Victimization Survey.

Of the average annual 204,370 victims in 2003-2004, about 65,510 were victims of completed rape, 43,440 were victims of attempted rape, and 95,420 were victims of sexual assault.

Because of the methodology of the National Crime Victimization Survey, these figures do not include victims 12 or younger. While there are no reliable annual surveys of sexual assaults on children, (pdf) the Justice Department has estimated that one of six victims are under age 12.

Contrary to the belief that rapists are hiding in the bushes or in the shadows of the parking garage, almost two-thirds of all rapes were committed by someone who is known to the victim. 67% of sexual assaults were perpetrated by a non-stranger – 47% of perpetrators were a friend or acquaintance of the victim, 17% were an intimate and 3% were another relative.

33. That's not necessarily the case.

Both "Rape victims" and "People who want to ban cervical cancer vaccine" are distributed very unevenly in terms of what demographics they belong to, whether they live in cities or the country, what state they are in and so forth. That means that it's not unlikely that considerably more or considerably less that 1 in 6 of the daughters of people who want to ban cervical cancer vaccine will be raped; my money would be on it being non-trivially less than the national average although that's just an educated guess rather than the result of research.

38. Rape is greatly reduced since the 70s
something like 85% less. It is a great social good that has been done. Mostly due to demographics (less baby boomers in the raping demographic).

Rape is also an effective tool of war.

Fortunately GOP fundies LIKE carrion. The stench of death seems a fundy aphrodisiac.

2. I hope they find this person,
prosecute him, find him guilty, and sentence him to life in prison without possibility of parole. There is evidence that pedophiles are incurable, and so they should be segregated from society.

29. Agreed.
He must have been way out on a limb to act so impulsively; he was way past the point where he had any control at all. And there seems to be no help for these guys.

It's sad all around. But they do need to be segregated from the general population, at least until somebody can figure out how to work with them.

35. Hmm.
I'd always believed that the rate of recidivism was particularly high for paedophilia, and for sexual offences in general, but http://www.ojp.usdoj.gov/bjs/crimoff.htm#recidivism suggests otherwise, as does http://www.rikosseuraamus.fi/25234.htm

This would be one of those times for me.

My heart goes out to that family. The girl for being tortured, her younger brother for feeling so helpless and their mother who will be blaming herself for this for the rest of her life.

This monster needs to be caught fast. He obviously doesn't care if people see him which, IMO, makes him that much more dangerous.

Even killing someone is unbelievealbe, but, the lasting affect I cannot imagine. Being a father of 2 daughters, that fear was and still is always on my mind. Sorry, but killing them isn't the answer. I would let things quiet down and catch the SOB and cut everything off I could grab! This just sickens me. And knowing that this goes unattended in the military is worse!

He stripped off his shirt as he ran away. He knew what he was doing, so you have to wonder how many rapes he's previously committed and how long it will take for him to commit another one.

My heart is broken for that little girl, her brother who must have witnessed it and her family.

I hope he goes to prison and his fellow inmates are tipped off to the nature of his crime.

42. I have a daughter....
and that fear is not fun to live with. Although the fear would be there if I had a son since boys are victims too unfortunately. I've concluded that being "Mom" is synonymous with "worry".

There was only one time so far that my "Mommy senses" told me something was not right. We were living in an apartment complex and one night I took my daughter for a swim. This one guy that lived in the complex came to the pool with his dog and was friendly. He asked what Abby's name was, how old she was then told her the dog was friendly, etc...small talk, nothing abnormal.

It wasn't until she and I were in the pool and I turn around and caught him staring at her in a way that made the small hairs on the back of my neck stand up. It was at that instant I realized that not once in our "small talk" did he ever introduce himself to me or ask me my name. He only asked about my four yr old daughter. My heart started pounding, I grabbed her, covered her in the towel, picked her up and left as fast as I could. I didn't even think, I just sort of acted on instinct I guess.

Police arrest rape suspect
An 18-year-old St. Petersburg man was arrested for Wednesday’s brazen daytime rape of an 8-year-old girl near 40th Street and Dartmouth Avenue N., police said.

Henry Sengaroun was identified by his victim. Sengaroun lives a few blocks from Booker Creek Park in the North Kenwood neighborhood, according to records.

He has two previous arrests, one for the possession of tobacco last September, and one for trespassing in March.

More details to come.
